I was a little apprehensive about checking out @hainanhometowncurry at Ghim Moh FC. The stallfront was adorned with various media accolades but there appears to be no queue in front of the stall even during the busy lunchtime hour. After walking around the FC (and the long line for Hin Fried Hor Fun), I decided to give Hainan Hometown Curry a shot.
For $4.50, you get a nice bowl of curry with a chicken drumstick, 2 to 3 pieces of chicken and some potatoes. You can top up $1 for some curry vegetables.
This is one good solid old school bowl of chicken curry. The chicken is soft and tender. But the curry itself was just superb. It is thick, creamy, flavourful and mildly spicy. I couldn't resist drinking up the curry as if it was some sort of soup.
It was so good that I actually went back on the same day to dabao for dinner. The curry chicken was sold out so I ordered their pork rib curry instead. The pork ribs were off the bone tender but I felt that the slightly gamey taste of the pork did not go really well with the creamy curry gravy.
I will also recommend their fish fillet curry. For each order, you will get two large pieces of fish fillet which are deep fried to order.
If you like generous portions and the taste of old school homely curries, this is definitely one place you should check out!
