Had to check out the hype @burpple made over @ChurnCreamery! Nope, wasn't disappointed - the ice cream is so smooth and creamy, with the soft taffy-like texture that proper gelato should have. I didn't really enjoy the Blue Pea and Sea Salt flavour (one scoop $4.50) cause it was way too milky and yet too salty at the same time. A strange balance I did not really enjoy. But I like the milder, lighter August mystery flavour. If you guess the flavours after a taste, you get the whole scoop free! (Pictured) Here's a hint: they both are flowers. Then I got it in the puffcone ($1.50): a flaky, crisp shell that was made to mimic the donut cone? I like it, the puffcone's buttered exterior gave it a smooth sheen and a flaky pastry taste before exposing the chocolate interior. Don't expect a crossiant-like pastry, the shell's too thin to give you the fluffiness. Thin, but sturdy, the cone holds in the melting ice cream with a layer of hot melted chocolate (done over the counter) that hardens as soon it gets in contact with the ice cream. Good thing they use good quality chocolate. In all a delightful gimmick that I enjoyed. But i'll probably order the ice cream in a regular cone in future!
Catching Jynx and Haunters is hard work, so I popped by Stateland Cafe (or Brother Bird - they keep changing their name!!!) to try the delectable looking Raspberry Burst ($15). Totally in love. The watermelon softee is icy and refreshingly sweet - perfect on a hot day. It's also very light, which gives you enough for the statement pieces: the deep fried mochi balls. Hot, dusted with a pinch of powdered sugar, it opens to release a gush of raspberry filling. You'd think it'd be sour, but it's sweet, a comforting flow of thick raspberry coolis with rosewater - almost like Bandung! The Mochi casing complemented it, was chewy and satisfying in its sweetness. I felt the macaroons were a little redundant, but they did add beautiful colour. Under it all, was a light base of almond crunch, homemade with some waffle-cone biscuits (or something similar) and almond bits. Back to Pokemon catching guys, I caught a Snorlex yesterday, but damn lame, only 232 CP -_- @statelandcafe
At the #EpicureanMarket2016 and again, Chef Testuya of @wakughin doesn't disappoint! This little bowl of sweet, boozy botan shrimp on buttery sea urchin is mind-blowing. But delicious things come at a hefty price: it's $25 for a bowl smaller than your fist. It is, however, a flavour explosion. Also a stand out, the new Yardbird! More on that later.
Happy Friday everyone! I'm gonna start my weekend with an amazing Thai Milk Tea parfait from Whisk and Paddle! Absolutely adore this pretty thing. The Cha Yen Krup ($9.80) is the BOMB! A scoop of MOVENPICK vanilla ice cream sits on a crumbly base of graham cookies and Thai Milk Tea cream before being topped with two golden sticks of sugared butter toast and a giant macroon. They excel at baking here so what really stands out are the two sugared butter sticks, crisp and sweet on the edges, soft and fluffy on the inside, perfect accompaniment to the ice cream. I do wish the Thai milk tea was a little stronger in flavour, it's rather mild, an under current of it swimming under the sweet ice cream and graham cookies. The gold dusted macaroon a delight, just the right consistency, and not too heavy that it ruins the balance of the dish. @whiskandpaddlesg #thaimilktea #parfait
What an underwhelming plate of sadness. What the monkeys nuts @theassemblyground Get your shit together! This was $18 if I am not wrong. Beef Ragout on Rosti. COME ON..... I basically paid $18 for frozen beef cubes, a slice or buttered bread, congealed "onsen egg" and a fried-to-a-crisp patty of potato strands that was smaller than my palm. While the sauce of the ragout was decent, it could hardly be considered good, the beef was hard, chewy, a lazily cooked dish I'd expect from a busy home cook. The egg congealed and gelatinous in nature. Don't even get me started on this sad excuse of Rosti. Cannot lah guys. Don't cheat people like that lei. Much disappointed by subpar food for ridiculous prices.
So thick, gooey and chock full of juicy minced meat bits, #ParadiseDynasty has one of the best zha jiang mians in Singapore. To be very honest, everyone has their own favourites, and this might not appeal to everyone, but I like it cause the handmade noodles are chewy and thick, really a mild taste that lifts the flavour of the gravy. It is such a satisfying (albeit a bit too much for a single person) dish, especially when eat warm.
Dinner with the family was a salted egg smorgasbord: salted egg prawns, salted egg chicken and salted egg sotong. I think we went a little overboard. But this little coffee shop (totally can't remember its name) really killed the salted egg game bru! Each satisfying salted egg crunchy with a hint of spicy from crushed curry leaves sent a shiver down my spine. Salted egg never goes out of style when done the traditional way. #saltedegg #kopitiam #zhichar
I finally managed to buy this. FINALLY. It's the rainbow chiffon cake from Polar! This $6 bad boy is not easy to get hold of. Apparently they get wiped out from every outlet before 12pm. So when I went to collect my Harry Potter book in the morning I popped by Polar and got this. TIS BEAUTIFULZZ! Puffy, fluffy and oh-so-pretty, the pastel cake is about 15cm across. I'm not gonna lie, it tastes exactly like Bengawan Solo's pandan chiffon cake. @polarpuffs_cakes #rainbowcake
Also on the menu at @paddyhills.sg, the drunken pig ($15). Fragrant pork collar fillets covered in crispy batter were unceremoniously chucked onto a pretty ceramic plate and served with a dish of nam Jim sauce. Now, the pork wasn't the most tender of meats, but it was a good starter. Chewy, crunchy and a heady meat flavour that was cut into by the sour, fish-sauce like nam jim dip. Very enjoyable and very generous portion for a cafe like this!
These are ugly little buggers that taste like a dream. The thin, crystal skin hides a treasure trove of juicy mushrooms, crunchy bits of veg for a bit of texture, in a moist, chewy parcel that is simply delightful. You can get this at Treasures Yi Dian Xin at Paragon. Yes, that's the one with the porcupine dim sum. #dimsum
Man oh man, was @paddyhills.sg a delight! I decided to treat myself to a soothing meal today, and tucked into a plate of Pink Rigatoni ($25). The snowy shavings of mild Parmesan brought a soft, cloud-like texture to the cacio e pepe - basically a fancy way to describe the creamy cheese and peppery sauce that coated the al dante rigatoni (those tube-like pasta bits). You'd expect something heavy and tiresome, but the plateful of rigatoni was instead comforting and lip-smacking good. The cheese and pepper sauce was just thick enough to generously coat each tube of pasta, and the surprise burst of pepper, caught the attention of each diner from the first bite. Here, the flavour in this pasta dish comes from slivers of chewy, sinful lardo. Now, what is lardo? That's basically cured strips of fatback - literally the fat off a pig's back. Think... Thick, chewy slices of bacon with an enhanced salami-like flavour. I adored how beautifully they were plated, the pale tubes artfully dressed upon a thin layer of tasty Mentaiko, that sadly was just decor, was only just thick enough for me to scrap.
You haven't lived till you've tried this. Or you probably just don't live in Punggol. Leong Ji Seafood at Punggol Settlement has this amazing, crisp-fried cuttlefish Kang Kong. Drenched in sweet, spicy sauce, sort of like Rojak sauce, the heaping plate of crunchy veggies, chewy cuttlefish and fresh strips of cucumber is such a great dinner treat. It's rather indulgent, but worth every cent. Best eaten with white rice. 👍🏼
