From Beo Crescent Lor Mee, which is apparently older than Singapore. It's quite clean-tasting, considering lor mee's ingredients. I should also say the ingredients were quite good

Came by for a team lunch and this is aparently a really popular old-school bak kut teh joint among my older colleagues. Really bustling with the weekday office lunch crowd and we were lucky to find an empty table almost immediately, though the food took some time to arrive (~10min). Their rendition of BKT would be up your alley if your preference leaned towards the peppery side - this was one of the most peppery BKT I'd ever tried! The portion of bak kut was generous and I enjoyed the lean version moreso than the fattier (you have the option to top up a small price for the fattier meat). Overall, a satisfying bowl especially on a cold rainy day.

My family still swears by the OG Jian Bo chwee kueh stall at Tiong Bahru Market over all the other franchise stalls. That perfect firmness and smoothness of the steamed rice cakes and the generous pile of fragrant, sweet-salty preserved radish… pure, nostalgic bliss. 💖

Got a large bowl of noodles to fill my belly, but the portion felt no different from the small bowl. Lol. Gone in a few bites. Increasing price, decreasing portion, depressing moments.

The thick, chewy noodles came with minced meat, braised mushroom, veggie, sous vide egg, and of course, the mildly spicy special chilli paste that tied the dish together. Taste-wise, it was a normal savoury profile with a little heat and slight creaminess from the egg. Also felt the chilli portion was kind of little. Comes with a small bowl of soup.

A signature and popular Sichuan dish that features cubes of chicken coated with spices and fried until golden brown and crispy along with tons of dried chilli and Sichuan peppercorns. It is spicy yet addictive. Be warned of the electrifyingly spicy and numbing sensation. I personally couldn't take the original level of spice and requested a less spicy 少辣 order which was still numbing and spicy on an acceptable level.

Sour and spicy broth with pickled mustard greens (酸菜) and fish slices. The yellow-green broth is made with various kinds of pickled veggies such as pickled mustard greens, pickled chilli peppers and pickled ginger. The fish slices are super tender with a velvety silky texture and zesty taste. The portion is good for sharing and it comes with glass noodles in there. This is an appetising dish and really comforting to have on a chilly day.

A classic dish from Sichuan cuisine that features crispy cauliflower florets stir-fried with bacon, garlic, scallion and chilli peppers in an aromatic savoury sauce. The cauliflower absorbs the flavour of the sauce so well and makes it addictively tasty.

An appetising and mildly tangy side dish made of shredded potatoes stir-fried with Sichuan peppercorns and dried chillies. The potatoes are not too soft, retaining a light crisp/crunch and the “hot and sour” 酸辣 flavour is not too overpowering in flavour.

The spicy fragrant broth is aromatic and not overly fiery. The spicy level was comfortable for me. The fish is fried to a slight crisp on both sides and moist inside. The meat is soft and reveals a tinge of smokiness with each bite. The accompanying veg provides a nice and juicy crunch. I would recommend pairing it with rice as it can get quite salty over time.

The queue and the waiting time to get our food cooked can easily go up to an hour. The secret to shorter waiting time is to call and pre-order in advance.

Had a comforting meal with tasty dishes and porridge. We had 3 dishes: sweet and sour pork, pepper beef and salted egg prawns. Personally enjoyed the sweet and sour pork the most and would have liked the salted egg prawns to be a little more crunchy! Overall had an enjoyable dinner and would go back again.

I had a delightful dining experience at Gu Zao Ren, which offers a diverse array of dishes to choose from. Among the selections, I highly recommend the cereal prawns, hot plate tofu, and chai poh omelette, all of which are must-try items at this establishment. The cereal prawns were not only generous in portion but also fresh and cooked to perfection. The hot plate tofu was a standout, blending a variety of ingredients with soft, melt-in-your-mouth tofu. The chai poh omelette, though small in appearance, delivered incredible flavor—crispy on the outside with a soft, creamy interior. Despite its simplicity, the dish was wonderfully satisfying. In terms of service, the staff were friendly, responsive, and efficient, even with a busy crowd. Overall, I highly recommend this spot for larger groups, as their portions are notably more generous than typical zi char places, without compromising on quality.
