Having stayed more than 5 years in Shanghai, I think I do know a think or two about Pan Fried Buns or Sheng Jian Bao. And in my opinion, this stall has one of the best Pan Fried Buns in Singapore.

The buns are made traditional way of semi-leavened dough and the filling is minced pork. From the size of the bun and the relative lack of ā€œbrothā€ oozing out of the buns, my guess is no broth jelly was added into the pork filling.

What it lacked in size and broth, it more than made up with its fresh tasting fillings and the texture of the buns. Sweet and fluffy with only the pan fried bottom side crispy, they were a joy to bite into.

Besides pan fried buns, they have the whole gamut of noodles, Xiao Long Bao and chilli oil dumplings. Quite sure I’ll be back to try the rest of the items in the menu.

Please note that although they open from 9am, Pan Fried Buns will be available only from 10.30am.

One of the best Kway Chap in Singapore. Their is the thicker type of Kway but no less silky and they don’t break every time you stir the bowl. Chilli could be better if there’s more heat in it cause right now it’s just savoury and tangy. Like the duck meat which has a hint of sesame oil in it.

Queue is not that long, about 14 customers at any one time. But the ladies are slower due to age and so please be patient. Also a tad more expensive than others but in my opinion, it’s worth the money.

Good choice of craft beers and their burger was on par but pasta was not that great. The carbonara sauce was underwhelming and the pasta itself tasted powdery, more like it’s made from multigrain flour rather than regular.

Will come try other items on the menu and enjoy more great beer. Just won’t be ordering pasta again.

For the record, I prefer wetter versions of Char Kway Teow. Fong Sheng did deliver on this aspect. But failed on the other critical requirements.

There was no wok heat to speak of and it was very evident because we did side by side tasting against the other CKT stall in Bukit Merah Food Center. It was also too sweet for my liking and although we did request for chilli, it was almost not detectable at all.

Saving grace was the portion was rather generous for $4.50 and they did give quite a bit of Chinese sausage, fish cakes and cockles. Service was friendly too.

This stall offers the wetter version of fried Hokkien noodles. And very generous portion. At $6 for a medium portion, it is equivalent to large portions at most stalls. And the copious amounts of egg given! Wow!

Taste wise, the prawn broth was super umami and properly soaked up by the noodles. Besides 3 large prawns and several slices of squid, they also added sliced pork belly. Lard bits and chilli are added based on customers’ choice.

Strongly recommend for those who like soupy version of fried Hokkien noodles!

After a couple of bad experiences with Michelin Taiwanese beef noodles in Taiwan, I kind of swore off Taiwanese beef noodles. Perhaps my taste buds cannot appreciate Taiwanese Beef Noodles.

But today I take it all back after lunch at Niu Dian. If you can forget that their Michelin Bib Gourmand was from a couple of years back and that Show Luo is their ambassador, and just concentrate on the food itself, you will be in for a pleasant surprise.

First of all, the broth is very special. Not too spicy and full of pleasant herbal after taste, it is very different to any I have eaten on my trips to Taiwan. The noodles can be tailored to all preferences, soft, normal or hard. Beef is tender especially the tendon.

At 19.90 for the Trio Combination, it’s a tad expensive but we’ll worth the money.

I am glad they came to Singapore.

At $4 a packet it is not the cheapest vegetarian bee hoon in town but they are very generous with the ingredients. Do remember to add gravy or else the bee hoon becomes a tad dry especially if you buy take away. The lady packing can separately pack gravy for you upon request.

Taste wise, bee hoon was a bit bland but combined with gravy and green chilli, the overall taste was quite good.

A bit expensive but very good muffins from this stall at Old Airport Road Hawker Centre. Good selection of different muffins. Strong buttery taste, loaded with walnuts and chocolate. Yummy!

Arrived at 10.40am to find the queue already 7 long. But it moved quickly and within 5 mins I got my plate of chicken rice.

I ordered steamed chicken, drum stick rice with chicken gizzard and braised egg as add ons. Total damage was $5.70! Incredible considering the inflation we see throughout Singapore.

Along with my order came a bowl of chicken soup and they garnished the plate of chicken rice with parsley and salted vegetables. The chilli sauce is free flow and it was spicy enough and piquant to boot. An excellent dip.

The chicken was super tender and silky, especially the skin. The drizzled soya sauce and sesame oil accentuated the flavours of the chicken. Add their chilli sauce and you get a near nirvana experience eating the chicken.

The rice was not exactly fluffy but far from being too dense with oil. Their chicken gizzard was clean tasting and crunchy but the braised egg was very normal.

Surprisingly their salted vegetables helped to add another tone of flavour to the chicken and the rice. I only wish they could be more generous with it cause I only got a few strands of this delicious pickle.

Overall, well deserving of their Michelin Bib Gourmand. Strongly recommend over some of those over hyped chicken rice stalls. Please note that only this stall in Tiong Bahru market got the Bib Gourmand award.

Arrived at this Michelin Bib Gourmand Friend Hokkien Mee stall at Old Airport Road Hawker Centre at 10.49am. Was already #8 in the queue and #3 was the next to be served. As I am not a big fan of the drier version of Fried Hokkien Mee, I only ordered the small portion at $5.00.

Got my noodles at 10.49am so only a 10 minute wait. You may ask why even 10 minutes wait for only 5 customers in front. Apparently they have to prepare a lot of take away orders. Packets after packets. In between they will cover the dine in orders.

First thing that stuck me beside the dryness of the noodles is that they use the thinner version of bee hoon. But this worked to their advantage as it was more capable of soaking up the umami rich flavours of the prawn stock. The other thing that I found unique was that they provide sliced chilli instead of chilli sauce. This I did not appreciate as much as it just imparted a raw spiciness to the noodles and I missed the savoury spicy chilli sauce that I am so used to.

What I did appreciate was the smokiness and little charred bits of noodles which you will not get from the wet versions. For $5, you get three halves of prawns (tail on) and a few rather large slices of squid. But no lard or sliced pork which was a disappointment because if I am going to risk the calories and the cholesterol, there better be lard and pork in sinful amounts.

Overall not bad but not my top favourite for reasons above.

A very good bowl of prawn noodles, well deserving it’s Bib Gourmand. Soup is full with umami and the portion is so large. Certainly the largest portion of noodles for $3.50! See video. The chilli sauce is also very fragrant and adds extra dimension of flavour to the noodles.

Ingredient wise, I got three half prawns, tails on, a few slices of pork and fish cakes. The prawns were of the right size and fresh so they tasted sweet and flesh was crunchy. Lady boss gave me the last two pieces of pork skin at no extra charge😃Apparently you can also order pork rib noodles or add pork ribs and pork skin to your prawn noodles but they ran out.

Better come early for this delicious and cheap bowl of prawn mee, especially if you want extras. In my opinion, it’s not the best in Singapore but certainly Top 5. Much better than some of those stalls selling prawn noodles with large prawns at exorbitant prices.

A very good Penang Prawn Noodles stall.

Arrived at 11am and ordered the All-in-one prawn noodles. For $7, you get two pieces of pork trotters, two pieces of pork ribs, two pieces of sliced fish cake, half a hard boiled egg and two prawns shell on.

Of the above, the fish cakes and the pork trotters stand out. Worth adding extra orders next time. The prawns were disappointing as after all the efforts to peel them, they were soft, not mushy, but definitely not the freshest nor crunchy.

The chilli sauce was adequate but nothing to scream about. Last but not least, there is the soup. It is legit full of prawn umami; you can’t stop till you’ve drank every drop!

Pro Tip: Add a dash of chilli powder into the soup if you like your food hot and spicy!
