Price: $12.80. Add $5 if you want to complete the set with miso soup, salad, and 3 pieces of salmon sashimi. The verdict is that this chirashi don is extremely value for money and I would totally visit it again if I am in the area. They gave a really generous helping of sashimi that has been pre-soaked, which was just right as it didn't turn out too salty. The variety of sashimi is also amazing for its price (just look at the photo)!
Price: $17.50 with GST. Verdict: no no. Like the matcha pancake, this French toast failed to live up to the expectations that it created as a result of its excellent look. There are just 2 words to describe this: bland and bland. And maybe burnt. As a desert dish (and a French toast at that), one would naturally expect ones sweet tooth cravings to be satisfied, but this just left me out and dry. The toast was bland, the interior was dry, and the exterior was slightly burnt. There was also no/ hardly syrup of any kind that could possibly save the day. The small scoop of ice cream hardly cut it. Sorry pacamara but this trip turned out to be quite a disappointment. Hopefully the next change in menu would bring something better. Until then, I don't think I'll be back for desert anytime soon.
Price: $17.50 with GST. Verdict: no not really. Was having a matcha and pancake craving so what better way to satisfy that craving than this. But unfortunately, this turned out to be quite a disappointment. Although I was extremely stoked when I first saw this being brought to us (due to the excellent look of it), i became really disappointed soon after due to the taste (or lack of). Very generally speaking, this matcha pancake is simply not sweet enough. All the components are unusually bland. The azuki (i.e. Red color paste at the foreground) was not only bland but also failed to cohere with the matcha pancake; you are basically adding dry (i.e. the azuki) on dry (i.e. the pancake). The essential scoop of ice cream saved this dish a little, but there was simply way too little of that. The little cup on the left contained sweet condensed milk, but it was also not sweet enough. Given this, my poor matcha craving is sorely unsatisfied and seems like I'll bear with it for the moment.
P.s. They have recently only changed their menu and I believe this is a new dish. They are no longer selling the sticky date pudding pancake as that belonged to the previous menu.
Price: ~7RM. This salted egg croissant is 👍🏻. Great for it's price. The salted egg filling was sufficiently sweet without being overly so. The amount of salted egg filling is also really generous. The croissant also had a good crispy texture on the outside and fluffy texture on the inside. Seven oaks starts selling the croissant at about 2pm each day (I think) so don't go too early!
Price: $12. Verdict - worth it for the price. For $12 sin lee gives you a large slab of chicken, a generous topping of salted egg sauce and a side of slaw. Although this is termed a burger, it should have been called chicken with salted egg sauce and bread. This is because the chicken was wayy too large to fit as a burger (although you can trim the chicken yourself to make it fit as a burger). The chicken was somewhat tasteless on its own but it fitted well with the salted egg sauce. While I thought the salted egg sauce was just right, my friends beg to differ and thought that it was not sweet enough. The only problem I had with this burger was the bun. I didn't like it cause it resembled those buns you could buy from NTUC off the rack - too dry and not fluffy enough. Though I wouldn't take this too hard on sin lee since it is a cafe and not a burger shop like wildfire. So if you looking to have some REAL burgers, please go elsewhere. But if you looking for some novel cafe food, head down to sin lee and get the really affordable $12 salted egg burger
Price:~$5. This prawn mee was good. It was sufficiently wet without being overly drenched. The chili was also nice given that the spicy/salty ratio was just right. The prawns were also fresh. This dish also had a good aroma. Would get this again when I'm in the area.
Price: $3. Was quite disappointing because i have seen such good review of this minced meat noodle. I found it very average and nothing special. The soup was a little too oily for my liking. The noodle was also not Q enough. The best thing is possibly the minced meat which was soft and tasty (though slightly too mushy). I'll give this a miss if I were in the area again
Price $5 for medium size. Absolutely value for money. The friend omelette was crispy and tasty and not overly oily. The oysters were also b big and fresh. One of the best oyster omelette I've had! It also came very quickly (less than 10mins) despite it being a super popular stall! Will definitely get it again if I'm in the area
Price: $14. This black velvet waffles is in fact black sesame waffles with green tea or black sesame ice cream. You have a choice of fluffy or crispy waffles; we chose the fluffy one and it was gooood. Overall there is a good balance of sweetness with appropriate tinges of saltiness, as one would expect from black sesame.
Price: $14.50. Would visit Montana again for this. 'Waffles on crack' - this was our final verdict. 'Layered' was the word that came to me when I first bit into this. These red velvet waffles were amazingly well layered with the different layers complementing each other perfectly. First there was the sweet and pleasing rose smell that pervaded my senses. Then there was the sweet caramelized rose taste that arrested my taste buds -- the sweetness was so amazingly well balanced. It was sweet without being excessively so; the sweetness was also not the run-of-the-mill raw sugar sweet, but rather it had a certain rose-vanilla layer to it. After this sweetness came the very slight and very comfortable salty taste. This saltiness did not stay at all but rather it was a passing taste. It flashed past without me knowing. But as it flashes past, one would almost instantly wish that it would last a little longer. And finally, the taste comes full circle, and I was finally left with the pleasant rose-vanilla aftertaste that was sweet to a balanced degree. The waffles were also amazing texture-wise -- they were fluffy on the inside but firm and appropriately crisp on the outside. Oh and before I fail to mention, the ice cream by itself was also 😍 and I would dare say put quite a few ice cream shops to shame. Overall it was amazing. The only thing I was confused about was that they only gave three triangles worth of waffles... So what happened to the last triangle?? But this is of course a point that should not distract us from ravenously digging in to these red velvet waffles.
Price: $4. Just about the best Wanton mee ever. At a mere $4, you get an extremely generous and delicious bowl of Wanton mee filled with char Siew (a freaking lot of them), fried wantons and Q noodles. What's more is that the individual items are 😍😍 especially the char siew!!! Never expected such good char siew from a wanton mee stall. The only downside is perhaps the queue, which can get REALLY long during lunch hours, and perhaps the rate at which the char siew gets sold out. Be early or be ready to regret missing out!
Price:$15. Might be back again! This new tempura outlet at suntec is rival of the established ginza brand in tanjong pagar. On its own, this tempura Don is absolutely value for money. You get a wide selection -- chicken, prawn, squid, corn and a few others. And it was well fried and the sauce was ok great. Nothing much I can fault. Especially at an economical price of $15. However, it pales a little in comparison to the ginza one which is marginally cheaper. Unlike the ginza one, this kohaku tempura Don doesn't come with the tempura egg (which is a serious plus point IMO), the chawamushi and miso soup. Taste wise, both are comparable, though it might ultimately boil down to preference. The tempura for this shop is more 'sauce-drenched' whereas the one in ginza is more fried. Though of course I'm quite sure that this can be varied if u were to specially request otherwise.
