Went down to @theforagecafe in the FAR EAST not too long ago to try some of their honey-themed creations including their signature honey buttermilk waffles, honey-based drinks and honey-infused desserts.

Owned by the same people behind @13honey, every item served has some element of honey in it.

Chilli Cheese Chicken Waffle Sandwich ($17). Breaded fried chicken cutlet, baby spinach and topped with a mild chilli cheese sauce. Don’t forget to drizzle it with some honey for a sweet touch.

The great thing about the chicken cutlet is that it isn’t too oily. The chicken thigh was fairly juicy but I thought it could do with a little more crisp. But I wished the cutlet serving was larger to fit the entire waffle. When you finished the cutlet, it’s as good as eating waffles with honey. More cheese sauce would be great too.

I love the honey on its own as it adds that natural sweetness to the savoury waffles.

Thank you @theforagecafe for having us!

Jalapeño Beef Ragu Waffle Sandwich ($20.20). One of the bestsellers and I just love how well this hearty combination works. Served with crispy bacon, wholesome jalapeño beef ragu, mozzarella cheese, sunny side up and some nachos to go along with.

The waffle size was perfect for this dish considering the medley of ingredients. It’s amazing how it retains its crisp on the exterior while the batter itself is so fluffy. The meaty beef ragu was flavourful and I loved that slice of crispy streaky bacon cause who doesn’t love bacon?

I loved their hearty and affordable Taiwanese fare and hope to see them back some day. Their braised pork rice (ć€è‚‰é„) and XL fried chicken are good!

Braised Pork Rice/ Lu Rou Fan ($12++ - Lunch Bowl/ $15++ for braised pork ala carte; Pic 1). A generous slice of braised pork belly that’s served with some rice, sous vide egg and cai xin/ choy sum. It comes with white rice by default but you can add $0.50++ to top up to shiny rice (like I did.

The great thing about the pork belly is that it’s got that balance between the melt in your mouth fat and tender meat. And being costed in the homemade soy sauce, it was irresistible that keeps you yearning for more.

The shiny rice deserves a special mention for how simple ingredients like lard and garlic oil can amplify a simple bowl of starch.

Pork Chop Bowl. ($10++ for Lunch Bowl). Also available on its own. For the lunch bowl, you’ll get a good amount of crispy, tender, tasty pork belly that’s marinated in a special seasoning and deep fried till crispy. To round it up, there’s some homemade pickled carrots and a sous vide egg.

XL Fried Chicken ($10++). You won’t regret ordering this. EXTRA LARGE pieces of BONELESS chicken thigh that’s coated with a crispy better. Choose from plum powder mix or salt pepper and preserved orange seasoning. We opted for the former and it added a distinct sweet, sour and salty flavour to the dish.

If you’re at Ghim Moh Food Centre for breakfast, why not have some thosai (dosa) or appam (hopper)? Heaven’s Indian Curry (01-15) serves pretty legit hoppers that are made to order. You can also order putu mayam and idly. It sells out pretty fast on weekend mornings so go early.

Masala Thosai/ Dosa ($2.50 per piece). Truth is I prefer thosai to prata. For a potato lover like myself, I usually go for the masala thosai. Within this fermented rice flour pancake is a decent serving of spiced potatoes. The final product is slightly tangy and on the softer side. It’s not crispy like paper thosai.

Served with dhal sambar, tomato chutney and coconut chutney made with fresh coconut, I like to mix the condiments together for maximum pressure.

The appam/ hopper ($2 per piece). Cooked to order using griddles imported from India, it’s not easy to find appam in most hawker centres. Each piece is like a thin and crispy fermented rice flour and fresh milk pancake (it’s usually coconut milk) with a soft centre.

Eat it asap as it gets soggy pretty fast. Remember to eat it with the orange sugar and grated coconut.

I enjoyed the egg hopper too although I wished the yolk was runny.

Managed to secure a table at the eleventh hour at the highly coveted @miznonsg - Singapore’s first Israeli restaurant. Hailing from Tel Aviv, the pita bread that’s based on a secret recipe is air flown frozen from Israel.

If you totally aren’t a fan of bread, then the Hraime ($26) is one main you can order. A spicy Moroccan barramundi stew with tahini, chilli and cilantro. I enjoyed the comforting, tangy tomato stew (lots of tomatoes in it) and it’s wonderful when you dip the pita bread in it. The barramundi was lightly seasoned although the serving was a tad small.

Was it spicy? Not really. Perhaps it can do with a little more harissa.

Almost every item on the menu has vegetables and tahini made from ground sesame seeds sourced from Israel and then mixed with olive oil, lemon juice and salt.

A flattened baked potato and served on baking sheets. It’s topped with sour cream. A bit too bland for my liking.

So I’ll begin my BREAD series. I’ll dedicate my first post for this series to panettone - an Italian bread that’s eaten during Christmas. It’s a tall, dome shaped bread that’s speckled with dried fruit and candied citrus peel. A good panettone should be super, duper light, soft and fluffy just like how @bakerybrera does it.

A 500g panettone set me aside an astounding $42. Probably the most expensive bread that I’ve ever paid in my life but Christmas is only once a year. So why not?

Some history about panettone. Originating from Milan in the 15th century, the version we are familiar with became popular in the early 20th century by Angelo Motta. It’s now eaten by Italians all around the world during the holiday season.

It may not be the most well-known bread in Singapore although you can find packaged ones at NTUC or Cold Storage all these years. It’s not exactly affordable too when it’s available.

P.S. Was hoping to get their stollen but it was sold out by the time I went so settled for this instead.

The Hot Chickpeas with melted tahini, hard boiled egg, onion, chilli and pita. The chickpeas were soft and if you want some flavour, eat it with the tahini and chilli. P.S. Thanks chef for giving this to us.
