Raw egg, seaweed and bonito flakes on warm, slightly sticky Jap rice. I made the grave mistake of not adding a dash of soy, and so it was a bit gooier than I prefer. So order, and don’t forget that soy!

Think chopped up putumayam stir-fried with anchovies, eggplant, potatoes, beans and onions. It’s like fried mee hoon, on crack.

On a side note, this Chinese Muslim restaurant serves everything from Thai to Sri Lankan to Chinese and Malay, and the crowd (there’s always one at lunchtime) is incredibly muhibbah. Portions are insane as well.

Found quite the gem at this unassuming food court. The laksa is slightly oilier than the others I’ve tried (7th Mile and Aunty Christina’s) but the portion and taste certainly don’t pale in comparison. The laksa paste is incredibly fragrant of spices, and the thin noodles do a great job at soaking all that flavour up. Come rainy afternoons, this will be an easy bowl to glean clean.

Green tea fudge brownie and phyllo pastry covered in a layer of green tea ganache with crunchy rice crispies.

You can choose between the Matcha, Houjicha or Genmaicha, but since the Matcha sold out, we only managed to try the latter.

Both were yums and packed with green tea flavour, although I preferred the not as sweet Genmaicha. Love that the soft and crunchy textures play really well together.

This genmaicha, or shaded green tea, comes with a touch of roasted brown rice powder and the result is a toasty, rice crackerish flavour. You’ll find the notes in the menu are amazingly accurate!

Great for an after-meal drink to soothe the tummy and clear the mind.

This is the bomb! Highly recommended for fried chicken lovers, the fried chicken ribs see impeccably firm and crisp skin and tender slivers of deeply flavoured flesh. The seasoning’s almost alike nam yu (fermented bean paste) — salty, briny and zesty.

I’ve always had my doubts about this dish (Ribs? Not dry meh? So little meat!) but I’ll admit I’m now a convert. Love that the ribs are deep-fried in bite sized pieces so they’re easy to hold, even easier to eat down to the tiny, tiny bones.

From the guys behind Mikey’s, NY Burger is quite the fast food joint. The cheeseburger holds its own with a meaty, well-seasoned cheesy patty, your standard lettuce, tomatoes and onions as well as their ultra addictive crack sauce (a secret recipe cocktail sauce). The bun, slightly too soft, leaves a little to be desired. But overall, a formidable burger at just RM10.99!

You can also add RM5 for a set (a drink and those fat chips), or grab Mikey’s pizzas by the slice.

The name’s no stranger - we’ve had Niko Neko matcha at countless cafes, so it’s nice to finally see them shine in a space of their own. We had house favourite Ren Matcha in its Iced Latte format (you can also choose to have it neat, on ice or with hot milk). Brothy and extremely fragrant with an almost seaweed-like umami finish.

Important to keep in mind that the green tea here is of prime quality, and not at all comparable to the bittersweet, instant matcha-y drinks we’re used to. Come ready to surprise your taste buds!

For those with a lighter palate, a simple bowl of fresh and lightly marinated salmon cubes, tamago and fish roe to top it off.

On offer every weekend, this is worth the trek to these rundown Cheras flats every time. The most perfectly swirled, buttery smooth omelette with glazed pork belly (the fat to meat ratio is high on this one!) and Simplicite’s soft and tangy sourdough slice.

Deceptively simple but the components are done so well, they come together beautifully.

Burnt Ends’ brioche stacked with a fried egg, dijon, thick-cut bacon, gherkins and greens! Really like how soft and buttery the buns were, and the beautifully cooked egg and bacon. I did find the bacon a bit too thick to manage in a burger. The dish also needed something more, perhaps a creamy sauce, to pull everything together.

Tender, juicy thigh with a golden crisp exterior. Perfect for a side to go with your carb-loaded mazesoba.
