Very, very strange latte art. But good coffee! Made with a double ristretto instead of espresso, the Magic is smoother, perfect for those who like their cuppa less acidic. Owls uses seasonal blends for theirs, and this one had two types of Ethiopian beans.

Totally underrated spot for coffee. The variety of beans from multiple roasters (a damn good seasonal line-up with the likes of Nylon, Cream, Seraph Awaken and Artisan) aside, this frothy mug is what to come for. The coffee beer is made with a black brew, honey and lots of foam. Flavour’s mildly bitter, but mostly sweet and smooth. Sort of a heady happy hour substitute if you like your beer a little sweet and non-alcoholic.

This tiny micro-roaster in OUG has a really wide selection of beans. I went with this menu-topper (which was also the cheapest haha). Light and fruity — really fruity, in fact. The mango notes came through the most, with hints of a stonefruit-y flavour.

My take on the brews here after two visits: they come off a little more acidic than usual.

Featuring a herbed pork patty that tastes uncannily like larb, this burger scores for interesting flavours. There are enough pickled onions and fresh tomatoes to keep the flavours appetising, and there’s a side of garlic aioli to jazz things up if needed. The skinny fries also comes nicely seasoned and hard to stop eating.

This newcomer in Jaya One is one to look out for! Sporting pink neon lights and fancy garden chairs, the space look fit for an after-work treat. (Although food’s a tad cheaper between 12-3pm if you can sneak in a long lunch!)

The recommended tonkatsu curry sounded odd, considering we were expecting Thai. But the Thai touch on the Japanese dish is tastefully done! Pork katsu is delicious, with a balanced fat-to-meat ratio and enough crispy batter to hold it together. This gets dipped into the spicy aioli and the runny but flavourful Thongchai’s curry. Served with Thai jasmine rice and clear soup with a meatball, this meal hits the spot.

For breakfast, or a light lunch, this melds herby pesto, savoury sundried tomatoes and creamy mashed avo on fluffy white bread. Tasty for sure!

Despite the fact that it’s a one-woman-show behind the bar, this tiny cafe doles out pretty delicious bites. Nothing extraordinary, but simple and done well - which is all that matters.

We really enjoyed this egg salad croissant, which sees a wonderfully creamy mix of eggs, potatoes and chives stuffed into a crisp croissant. It was nice that they served it in neat halves. Made it easier to gobble up.

Nice, nutty brew with a side of quiet at this cafe nestled in neighbourly SS19. Sharing half the space with a wedding planner and florist, Road to Emmaus is all kinds of pretty and peaceful.

Everyone who has ever frequented Jaya One at some point will likely have fond memories of Marufuku. This udon joint started out as a cheap and good spot for students, working folks and all, and stayed that way! They’ve moved to B1 from their old ground level store, but quality and prices have remained.

The simple, fuss-free house special sees taut udon doused in the lightest dash of dashi, topped with runny egg and spring onions. I like mine cold, with a few good scoops of chilli oil to take flavours up a notch.

The La Cappuccino is no longer a mini, local-esque caffeine kick but rather a cappuccino that’s darker and nuttier than their usual white. Still a very good one, made with their house roasted beans. The Long Black (RM7), not pictured, is also good — not too bitter but still strong enough to satiate.

Before you get all excited about a crab sandwich at just RM12, know that the crab refers to filament crab sticks. That said, the creamy chilli sauce is really punchy and goes nicely sopped up with bread. Makes for a good mid-day snack to share, or even a light lunch!

Made with house blend (Driver) featuring Indian and Guatemalan beans, this was an excellent white. Creamy, subtle and smooth. So good I downed it and had to order another cup.

The black made with the same blend is also pretty tasty, although not as impressive as the white. Flavours are definitely on the bolder side - the team explains that it caters to their older/family crowd who likes their coffee strong.
