On a long dreary work week, I remember the precious slow Saturdays I live for. One recent one at Janie the Bakery, where the bakes are fresh and amazing. All takeaways have to be preordered so I dine in and am seated in the rustic ambience while waiting for my bakes to be served. What other perfect way to wind down a bit on a Saturday?

We of course snagged some Dona Manis banana pie before exiting the mall but Janie now becomes my new mainstay at Katong Shopping Center 😬

At an office get together, a colleague said this was a must order at peperoni and she was right. Beyond the reliable pizzas Peperoni offers, explaining its numerous locations that had braved the competitive food scene in SG; don’t forget to get these succulent chicken wings with a mildly spicy sauce!

One of the better bread hauls from Donq was this coffee chocolate bread with delicious chocolate ribbons within the reliable white bread and a nice cookie crust with chocolate chips. If I’m looking for a sweet bread treat here, the melon pan at Donq remains one of my go tos.

Second time at Papi’s and it’s a casual alfresco setting at the Seah Street outlet.
My favourite taco out of the lot was the grilled fish tacos because it proves a point that you can have a flavourful fish taco without having to deep fry the fillet.
The evening’s soft corn tortillas came in different hues for the different sets we’ve ordered and made me curious if these were in-house made, overall the Mexican food here fare better on the flavors scale that masks the quality of ingredients at a palatable price point.

A delightful impromptu meal I had of late, we managed to score a table for 2 at Miznon on a Friday evening.
The Jerusalem Mezze was excellent for my dining companion on a clean - vegan food diet and a bread lover like me. I happily polished the boiled egg on her behalf and thought to myself “oh I do need to visit Israel at one point in my life!”
Miznon falafel patties were one of the best I’ve had in town and I loved the idea of crispy pita to spice up the otherwise superb Israeli staple carb.

For ~$10 for these pastas, kudos to Burpplebeyond, they were value for money plates of commercially sourced dry pastas with flavourful sauces and condiments.

Will this be a weekend hobby? I made the following Burpplebeyond redemption this week:
Keong Siak has been know for their various innovative bakes and to find them on Burpplebeyond was like a gift.
Since my previous visit years ago, I did hear that resident bakers have changed but was happy to find the cakes I had as solid as I remember the bakery to be. My rose lychee cheesecake was a dainty delicious play of the establishment’s signature cheesecake. The matcha swiss roll was also memorable with an excellently soft roll cake that held a generous serving of smooth matcha cream. We loved the powdered matcha to balance out a very sweet matcha icing like garnish.

The trip we ate and ate:
One of the best things I had were these kuehs and claypot coffee at ICC Pudu. I haven’t had softer kuehs with freshly grated coconut yet. This becomes a must visit pin when in KL.

Mum found the KL Hokkien Mee slightly underwhelming without the right wok hei flavor, I was looking forward to the chicken wings recommended but was similarly unimpressed with the nicely fried but small looking pieces of boned poultry.
The saving grace were the slightly boiled
fresh cockles, my go to shellfish 🤪
Maybe the fact that we took the extra initiative to travel here for the food brought about pent-up expectations. Otherwise Tiong could have been just another nice place to have local food.

Will this be a weekend hobby? #3 I made the following Burpplebeyond redemption this week:
Amuse ice cream sandwich shortbread, the banoffee pecan flavor and triple chocolate flavors. The ice creams here are a treat and good for they are non-icy and smooth, sadly I felt the chocolate shortbread on chocolate ice cream a slight chocolate overdose after awhile.
That said you’d find me revisiting to try the brownies and other ice cream flavors when around the area, enabled by burpple.
