This was quite good! I can see why thereās a long queue for it - we arrived at 11.50am and there was a short queue of ~5 pax ahead of us, and we got our food 10-15mins later. Best to come before 12pm bc the queue was quite long then.
The soup was flavourful with a pleasant natural sweetness, but without feeling too rich/heavy. Even though the fried fish was soaked in it, it didnāt make the soup greasy! Also didnāt feel thirsty after this so I think no / not much MSG is added.
The fish was very thick and meaty - itās not as succulent / tender compared to some hawker fish soup stalls but it feels more premium than usual. One of the fish slices had a bit of a fishy taste, but the rest were fine and I surprisingly preferred the fried fish, even tho it was not crisp after being soaked in the soup. The layer of batter made it taste better. Also liked the crispy rice sprinkled on top, which gave a bit of a crunch!
Definitely better than king of paofan for me!
This is one that I always wanted to try but as they usually closed by 4pm in the afternoon, no chance to drop by until now.

Heartwarming bowl of Pao Fan that the broth is rich yet not overpowering. So comforting that I can just keep drinking it. Ordered the Fresh Prawn Pao Fan that comes with 3 huge fresh prawns. For an extra indulgence, I have added some extra fish slices.

Pretty good soup broth but other than that, nothing special. Ordered the duo fish pao fan ($7.80) + additional side of egg floss (+$1). Fried fish was on the tougher side, and the amount of crispies were quite little. Personally donāt feel that itās worth the price tag.

Finally tried the paofan here! While the queue to order was rather long, it was pretty fast. Had the duo fish just to get the best of both worlds, and added prawns which I enjoyed how sweet and fresh they were tho itās an additional $4 for 2 pieces. Fish slices were thick, broth was flavorful!
Also liked that they were generous with the fish egg floss and the crispy rice gave it texture! Slightly pricey but will still go back for this when the craving hits and if the queue isnāt crazy especially since it gets pretty hot in the afternoon.
The weekās gonna start again and thinking of what to have for lunch after all that weekend feasting? If youāre working in CBD, check out Chao Ting that serves Pao Fan (ę³”é„) - rice in seafood soup.
Popular with lunch crowd, this casual dining outlet by Jumbo Group never fails to attract queues during lunch hour.
Not the most common of hawker dishes, Chao Tingās version has been modernised to cater to the modern palette. The soup is packed with umami in every mouthful as the stock is slow cooked using prawns, fish bones, pork and chicken for hours. Fragrant steamed jasmine rice is added to the broth similar to Teochew porridge.
I had the fried fish pao fan. The fish slices were thick, flaky and fresh and were coated in a light batter making it easily palatable. Standard toppings include fried egg floss and crispy rice added an additional dimension to this soupy delight.
While this was delicious on every note, my only concern is the amount of MSG added as I felt a lingering aftertaste for the rest of the afternoon.
