Price: $18.80 (set lunch). Verdict: recommended. Japanese cuisine is extremely prevalent in singapore, but to find a restaurant that is decently priced and has good quality food is not easy. Sumiya, and in particular this chirashi don set lunch, stands out as one of the few that fulfills both criteria. First, price-wise, it is extremely value for money. At $18.80 you get a chirashi don, chawamushi, salad, miso soup, mochi desert, green tea, and some small side appetizer. And unlike some restaurants that try to recoup losses by giving customers mini-sized versions of everything, this restaurant has (thankfully) avoided such sharp practices. Secondly, quality-wise, the dishes though not top grade are actually very decent. The sashimi cubes (comprising salmon and tuna) are quite fresh, and the avocado was soft but not mushy. The mochi also stands out; the skin was just right - soft but not too thick, and the black sesame filling was also in good proportion - decently flowing and sweet but not artificially or excessively so. Perhaps my only gripe with this meal is the chawamushi that is slightly lack-luster in taste and texture, but all things considered, it is really a non-issue. In conclusion, it is a set meal that is satisfying for both your tummy and your wallet. So do drop by for their set lunch if you are in orchard, craving from some jap food, but don't know where to go without bursting your wallet!
