The folks behind the wildly successful DanLao 蛋佬 brand may be one that is particularly known for their various concepts such as EggTalk and Kawan Bowl serving up scrambled egg rice bowls, but it does seem that these folks do seem to have set their foresights a little further than just simply serving up different variations of scrambled egg rice bowls within the F&B scene in Singapore. The brand had launched another new concept in the past couple of months named Global Wanton Mee 国际云吞面 — the very first stall of the brand is actually situated right beside the Egg Talk outlet that is situated at the Kopitiam coffeeshop located within Blk 253 Choa Chu Kang Market & Food Centre. Occupying a stall that is situated somewhere in the middle of the food centre, the stalls in which Global Wanton Mee and Egg Talk occupy are actually connected. As some might have probably caught from its namesake, Global Wanton Mee serves up wanton noodles with a fusion touch; that being said, the menu is pretty limited considering how they are only offering a rather small variety of three (3) types of Wanton Mee. That being said, they also do have quite a decent number of Bites that are being listed on the menu as well.
We found it a bit of a difficult call to decide between the Curry Fried Chicken Noodles and the Hot Spicy Chicken Noodles but we eventually found ourselves going for the latter since there really isn’t many instances where one would be able to find a chicken roulade to be served with Wanton Noodles elsewhere. Whilst Global Wanton Mee does not describe the elements that goes into their dishes on the menu, it can be observed from our order of the Hot Spicy Chicken Noodles that the dish does come with chicken roulade, egg noodles and pork lard, blanched greens and Lao Gan Ma-esque chili — the Hot Spicy Chicken Noodles also comes with a bowl of soup on the side as well. The egg noodles does seem to have been tossed with a little bit too much dark soy sauce, though that does add quite a bit of flavour that antes up the savouriness of the dish which matched up against the Lao Gan Ma-esque chili anyway. The Hot Spicy Chicken Noodles can be described as a little bit of an in between of drunken chicken, Sichuan-style Mala dishes and wanton noodles; the chicken roulade is served in the same way as how one would expect drunken chicken to be served — cones poached and chilled, the Lao Gan Ma-esque chili is lined neatly atop. This does provide a temperature contrast between the noodles and the chicken, while the savoury notes of the Lao Gan Ma-esque chili is further antes up the flavours with a slight contrast from the inherent numbness of the Sichuan peppers — the level of spiciness being pretty suitable for those whom have moderate levels of tolerance to spiciness.
The addition of pork lard helps add a crisp crunch to the dish; the pork lard adding a slight fragrance without being all limp and soaking in oil. Overall, quite a satisfying bowl of noodles though also one that lacks wantons as well whilst at it. Global Wanton Mee is a pretty interesting establishment granted we wished that they do offer a larger variety of Wanton Mee with a fusion element; the availability of two (2) fusion Wanton Mee alongside the standard Wanton Mee that is their Signature Wanton Mee just does not feel “global” enough. That being said, Global Wanton Mee does seem to be a brand that carry its affiliation with the DanLao brand quite well; despite offering vastly different food offerings, one can expect that same level of quality in its food as DanLao where one is assured that the food is served with a more than just decent consistency. Prices of its Wanton Mee offerings range between $5.50 to $6.50; the lowest-priced item being the Signature Wanton Mee while the priciest would be the Hot Spicy Chicken Noodles that we have had. Not sure if Global Wanton Mee would share the same success as DanLao did that led to the expansion of that brand into Kawan Bowl and EggTalk; that being said, we do hope to see a few more outlets of Global Wanton Mee that feature more variants of fusion-style Wanton Mee considering its still relatively affordable pricing to give the masses a taste of its modern style of Wanton Mee unique to the brand for now.
