Happy to have found a Baker & Cook in the East near Siglap! Paid a visit last Sunday morning and ordered a Spanish omelette and an eggs ben. At $17++ a pop, you's expect the dishes to be mind blowing but sadly they were quite ordinary.
Was brought here by a friend one night, quite inaccessible in the depth of Siglap, near Opera Estate. Honestly a little pricey for a hideaway in the East - Mackerel was $35 and steak was $26 - and also the place isn't amazing looking or fancy. But it opens till late which is great, and all in all it was a hearty meal with great flavours and generous portions. What blew me away though was the dessert - the sticky date pudding (not pictured)! Seemingly unattractive and unassuming, it was the best stick date pudding I've had in SG to date and I would go back just to eat it.
A generous slice of salmon coated on top with dao jiao, a yummy bean paste. Comes on a bed of glass noodles, which was quite light but balances out the heavy salmon taste well. And it was very pretty!
I really enjoyed this!! Really refreshing and it tasted so yummy and delightful, but if there was supposed to be alcohol in it I didn't taste it. I really wanted more but sadly it was also quite exorbitantly priced at $4.50 a sphere.
There's nothing like a local breakfast of eggs and kaya toast. All the fancy brunches in the world somehow may never quite measure up to the comfort of a no frills, cheap and authentic breakfast like this. Eggs soft boiled to perfection, soft bun with fragrant kaya, and a self-service assortment of baked goodies that I grew up on, with the likes of cream horns, chocolate cupcakes, and egg tarts. Happy that this place has survived gentrification so far and hope it stays that way.
I love this place! During lunch they've the most awesome set - for $18 you can choose a main, a soup/ salad/ dessert, and coffee/ tea. My mum and I often come here to dine as its quiet and the food is good. This time, she had the sea bass (not pictured) which was huge and well done and the skin was crispy to perfection. I had the steak which was really tasty, and the creme brulee. The creme brulee is HUGE! Best to come with a friend and have them order a soup or salad and you can split the portions because it's generous and just so worth it. There's also a pasta set for $15!
Was brought here by a friend for lunch and was pleasantly surprised. Tucked away in a nondescript stretch of shops opposite Changi Prison, I probably never would have ordinarily found this place. This place has been around for a while, before the whole café scene got so engorged, and so it escapes from presenting itself as try hard. While the place itself is nothing fancy, the food was good. They've a lunch set that is very worth it, coming with a main and a drink. I had the baked Portugese chicken and rice, and it was filling and wholeheartedly delicious. The calamari we had to share was also amazing!
Had been told that the eggs ben here was good, so I decided to give it a go. On the whole, it was good but quite unextraordinary. They use bacon instead of ham, and I don't really like bacon so I topped up $3 for parma ham for an already expensive dish ($20++). The place itself is nice but the service on that Sunday morning was terrible, understaffed and drinks took so long that by the time they arrived we had almost already finished our mains.
The better cheesecake of the two we had. Full of flavour, creamy with a thin layer of coffee jelly on the top. Had a delicious earl grey essence about it, which I really enjoyed! The Nutella coffee with fresh milk was just a glorified mocha.
Infinitely photogenic indeed. However when it arrived, we were surprised to see that it was gelatinous in consistency. Like when we shook the plate, the slice of cake wobbled. Lol! We had a good laugh about that. Apparently it's made out of yoghurt, which accounts for the texture, and it's healthy-ish. Taste wise, it was nothing amazing. In fact, it was very mild, like a cheesecake that couldn't decide to be a cheesecake. A little on the pricey side at $7.50 a pop, for a pretty unextraordinary tasting slice of cake.
