🌨 They are so sweet with every bite, tangy and savoury from the spicy, vinegary sauce. Truly a very affordable dish at $4.50 for 10 pieces. You'd imagine a plate is great for sharing, but nah you probably can't stop after one piece. 😝

Generous servings of shredded chicken and mushroom are topped on kway teow tossed in sweet black sauce, drizzled with a hint of lard oil. Swatow Wanton Noodles has been operating since 1970s, changing hands from mother to daughter, but still serves up a great rendition of the traditional Ipoh Hor Fun ($3). Distinctly fragrant, definitely worth the while! (especially if you don’t want to join the snaking queue for the BCM soup 😉)

Mee tai mak with sufficient wok hei and umami from minced pork, chai poh and raw egg. Bubbling gravy is luscious and savoury to the palette. This has been a firm favourite since our discovery last year 😊A medium serving good for 2 costs $8 only, what more can we ask for? 🍲

The bowl of laksa ($5) comes with egg, tau pok, fish cake. Taupok was very enjoyable to bite into, as the gravy oozes into your palette. Unlike the rich and coconutty variant, this laksa brings back nostalgic warm memories of the laksa we had as kids. It's creamy, fragrant, and savoury but not overly rich. Definitely won't leave you too guilty if you're watching your calories.

Got up early for a platter of pan fried kuehs and carrot cake. This stall fries up Png Kueh, Soon Kueh and Ku Chye Kueh in carrot cake styles. Especially like the layer of crisp bits with egg and chai poh coating to contrast with the softer parts of the kueh. No bad comments for the carrot cake either. The best of both worlds if you love kuehs and carrot cake - definitely one of those traditional homey brekkie you wouldn't want to miss :)

We went in for a taste of their Fried Bean Sauce La Mian / 北京炸酱面, and the portions were huge, a bowl of noodles could probably satisfy both of us. For $4, this is great value for money. Sauce is thick and full of meat bits, goopy but with a good consistency (no clumps), and flavourful.
.
Garnished with thinly sliced cucumbers, mix up the noodles with the gravy and you’ll get a crunch in every bite. Add a spoonful of fried dried chili for an extra kick.

Started by 3 bankers holidaying after their business trip in Hawaii, we had the opportunity to chat with one of the co-founders, John, when their shop was first opened in 2015. He knew there was a market for healthy and delicious food, given the then salad craze. Using only the freshest fish, they could re-create the dish they enjoyed on their trip and bring the poke concept to Singapore.
.
The mains we enjoyed were the lunch bowls ($15.90) and ultimate bowls ($18), with the choice of a combination of poke scoops ranging from spicy salmon to wasabi ahi tuna.
.
The fish is fresh, tasty and packs a punch. Wasabi is strong but not overly potent, and the spice has been tweaked up slightly in recent times. Topped with tropical refreshing ingredients to the likes of cherry tomatoes, edamame, raisins and fish roe, this is a definite stop for your poke cravings!

Eating is probably one of our personal favourite past times and so many conversations and moments were shared over food. Thank you for accompanying us on this foodie journey and we cannot wait to learn and share more great food with you guys. Cheers to the new year and may your 2018 be filled with blessings, great discoveries, and lots of yummy foods! ✨😋
✨ Discovered another ice cream shop near my house and since it was the last day of one for one deals, we had all the more reasons to go. Salted Gula Melaka ice cream was a balance of sweet and savoury; Earl Grey Lavender had a delicate taste and lavender was thankfully not overpowering. We love that the ice cream is of a smooth, creamy and meltey texture. While some love western waffles that are crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside, we seem to love either variants quite equally. The waffles here remind us of the gold 'ol waffles sold at traditional bakeries. They are warm, soft, buttery and pillowey, with the outer layer just a little crunchy. With the affordable pricing (less than $7 for a single scoop with waffle) and unpretentious interior, the desserts here are truly a delight to savour.

The usual culprit was the Mazesoba Nogaya ($12.80) topped with an onsen egg, with generous servings of minced pork and spring onion. Delicious to the finish!
.
This time we were more adventurous at trying out their seasonal menu, and went for their Cold Wasabi (13.80). Topped with generous shredded char siew and a pleasing serving of wasabi sauce, the noodles are tossed in ice water, giving a chewy texture. Strong wasabi flavours blend well with the fragrance of the bonito flakes, giving a refreshing kick in every bite without being overpowering.
.
The seasonal menu is only available at their Tanjong Pagar outlet, and started from Aug this year. A definite stop for your ramen cravings!

Flavours include banana, yam and sweet potato, going for 5 pieces at S$2. The unappealing yet really tasty Thai Fried Banana (กล้วยแขก) have been deep fried into just the right crispiness. Quite different from our local goreng pisang. They are thinly sliced, coated with rice and wheat flour batter, with finely grated mature coconut and studded with white sesame seeds, which explains the rich fragrance. Under the crisp shell is soft, ripe banana. A great snack to be shared to split the calories 😅 You got to give it a try if you have not tried it before!

This bowl of wtm is unassuming and differs from those with charred flavours. Great for those who prefers their wtm simple, rather than those with roasty charsiew, and sauces with more body. The noodles here were quite springy and did not clump together. Chilli sauce was quite well-balanced with a distinct fragrance of lard. Crispy bits of fried lard were also added for the extra oomph. A small bowl costs you $3.5, but for $4.5, you get five boiled wantons that boasts smooth, thin skins. Charsiew slices were lean, but not dry. Grateful for this new addition to the coffeeshop below my house 😋
