Their regular-sized Obihiro Meibutsu Pork Loin Don comes with 4 meaty slices of pork loin. Not quite as melt-in-the-mouth tender as we'd have liked, but the pork slices are thick and flavorfully grilled, with the sweet-savoury glaze adding the caramelised smoky depth to every piece. Goes really well with the pickles and the bed of fluffy rice which carried the sauce well! While they have a budget-friendly version with Canadian pork loin, I'd say go for the Kysuhu-origin pork for the most authentic experience!
Chill and treat yourself to a little slice of heaven at K. Patisserie @k.patisseriesg! It's a bit ulu (tucked within Onze which is kinda obscure from street view), but I adore its pastel pink interior!
I enjoyed their Pulut Hitam Cake during my last visit a year again, and their 𝐆𝐨𝐦𝐚 𝐂𝐡𝐞𝐞𝐬𝐞𝐜𝐚𝐤𝐞 was just as impressive! The sweetness level was just right, and the balance between the nutty fragrance of the black sesame and cream cheese was done well! The cookie crumble and Oreo cookie base were a nice touch to contrast against the moist, smooth cheesecake.
Take away the instagrammable aesthetics and brightly coloured visuals, the signs were all there when the Curry Fishballs (the only savoury among the tray of 6) was the best item in Jane Eyre’s Six Signs. The Chilled Mango Sago Pomelo Cream 杨枝甘露 and Double Skin Milk were decent but that’s not saying much considering how one-dimensional the rest of the items were. The coconut milk base was flat and pretty diluted in the Blue Crystal Dessert and Taro Cone Coconut Sago, and the taro balls were lacking chew. The Red Bean Paste was promising but could have been cooked longer for a less grainy mouthfeel.
Maybe it’s a branch thing (perhaps the Chinatown branch is better?) or a us thing, but we ain’t vibing man.
These insanely thick-cut slabs (or chunks, for that matter) will set you back for $16 a plate, but the rich fattiness and melt-in-the-mouth texture of the fresh salmon slices was to die for! The sweet mirin/soy sauce marinate makes it even more decadent though it can get quite surfeiting due to the thickness, so it's best shared with your friends!
The Chicken Katsu Curry is also decent with a crispy chicken cutlet and robust curry sauce, though a larger portion & more veggies other than the sad carrot smidgens would have made the dish even better.
Can't go wrong with their Salmon Mentaiko Don either! The salmon slices were well seared on the outside while slightly raw on the underside, and the smoky char on the mentaiko sauce elevated the umami flavours.
Having these coin prata at Sin Ming Roti Prata for breakfast might have been the best decision ever. These crispy bite-sized treats are freshly made to order, so they stay hot and flaky without being too greasy! The best part is the layers within are still soft and chewy even though it's cooled down a little after all the photo-taking. 🤭
Personally think the curry is equally important when it comes to good prata, but the chicken curry here is the gao gao, savoury type perfect for dipping your pratas into! The meat was fork-tender, and the moderate spice level wasn't overpowering! Was told that their fish curry is even better, so I guess that's something to look forward to in my next visit! 💯
P.S.: Go during off-peak hours to avoid the queue.
Just look at how fully stuffed this 𝐓𝐨𝐧𝐤𝐨𝐭𝐬𝐮 𝐆𝐢𝐦𝐛𝐚𝐩 is! Tightly packed within the fluffy rice roll are vibrantly coloured ingredients like pickled radish, egg & carrots, and a chunky piece of deep-fried cutlet! The crunchy, juicy pork slices really hit home, and the portion is good for one without feeling too full. Or you can go for their Shrimp Gimbap, with lightly battered shrimp tempura wrapped in the middle. They also have a mala pork version that I would return for my next visit! 🍙
Ordered the 𝐂𝐡𝐞𝐞𝐬𝐞 𝐓𝐭𝐞𝐨𝐤𝐛𝐨𝐤𝐤𝐢, which took slightly longer to serve due to the weekend dinner crowd. I enjoyed the thin & long rice cakes coated with melted cheese. Fair warning to y'all, the gochujang sauce is rather spicy, so prepare your tissues first! 🤭🔥
P.S. Yay to free-flow banchan, though we would have loved a greater variety instead of just kimchi (which we like!) and jalapeno!
Love a good coffee shop hidden gem, such as this Xin Peng La Mian at the recently refurbished Bistro 8 at Blk 442 (opposite the 448 market)! Saw several reviews that the Spicy Red Dumplings here are a must try and they really didn’t disappoint - these dumplings are so huge and meaty and only at $5 for a plate of 10! The meat filling texture is less compact and more similar to what you’d get in XLB but it sure is packing with flavor and juices! The sauce was decent with a good vinegary kick but slightly lacking in the heat department, though you can add more chili (Lao Gan Ma) on your own.
Always on a lookout for a good noodle dish as a self-professed noods lover, and the huge portion of Chicken Chop La Mian ($5) left me in a food coma towards the end LOL. The hand-pulled noodles were cooked well with a decent chew and the cutlet was not too oily, but I felt that the meat sauce was somewhat underwhelming. Honestly if not for the little traces of minced meat, I didn’t know it was minced meat sauce lmao.
Meat's on the menu at 88 Hong Kong Roast Meat Specialist! Whether you are a char siu fan or a sio bak fan, the best way to settle your meat cravings is to order their Char Siew+Roasted Pork Noodle! Between the thick cuts of caramelized char siew and crispy sio bak atop the lard-coated noodles, I found myself gravitating towards the former cos of how tender it was with the perfect fat-to-lean meat ratio. The outer layer is charred just enough to impart a smoky flavour onto the caramelly aroma of the honey glaze.
Surprisingly the roast pork was on the leaner side, with the emphasis on its biscuit-like crispy skin that gives off a satisfying crunch with every bite! While the meat cut was still juicy, it wasn't as savoury as I would have liked. Not the best I have had so far, but a very decent option to go with your combination of roast meat!
The creamy & glistening lava egg deserves a mention here. Makes the entire dish even better! 🥚
