🍞 Mala Pot
🧧 CNY 2022 Special
📍BreadTalk (@breadtalksg)
📌 Multiple Outlets
💰 $6.80

BreadTalk may face its fair share of criticism but one thing that cannot be disputed is their incredible creativity when it comes to new products. The Mala Pot is their biggest solo bread to date, made to replicate a mala hotpot with a whole slew of ingredients, including lotus root, mala chicken filling, broccoli, surumi crab leg, cheese, enoki mushrooms, beancurd and more. Of course, it also dons a hefty price tag to justify its size and amount of toppings.

This bread alone could probably serve as a whole meal. Its savoury and slightly spicy with all the elements coming together to create a unique experience of textures and flavours, and I honestly think this is BreadTalk’s most impressive creation to date.

I did find the mala chicken filling a little rubbery but it wasnt a big deal as the other savoury ingredients came together to elevate the rest of the bread.

Its pretty pricey but worth the try given the sheer creativity of it. Huge props to the R&D team for bringing this to fruition!

🍯Bunny Madeleine ($5)
This adorable madeleine is made with more care compared to regular madeleines, as they bunnies have to be removed from the moulds carefully so as to not break their ears or tails. I could instantly taste the sweetness of the honey that was added, and I loved how buttery and aromatic the entire madeleine was.

❤️8 Treasures ($7.80)
This pastry is made with 8 ingredients: jujube, longan, walnut, raisins, green tea, chrysanthemum, goji and honey. The jelly dome on the top has a nice aromatic taste and the entire pastry is fragrant and not too sweet. I was surprised at how well the jelly dome went with the traditional French pastry!

🥐Jujube Honey ($8.80)
This croissant is generously filled with red dates, longan stew pastry cream and topped with candied red dates. The croissant remains crisp even after a long time, and the fillings complement the buttery nature of the croissant well. The red dates give the pastry a very traditional taste and its definitely one of the most unique croissant flavours I’ve had.

🍍Pineapple Osmanthus ($8.80)
A CNY version of their ever-popular Fleur de Framboise, this pastry is shaped into a flower with pineapple stew in the centre and topped with osmanthus pear confit. The pastry is buttery and the amount of pineapple stew is adequate in providing each bite with a tangy sweetness. Do be sure to cut this in a cake style in order to enjoy a good dispersion of pastry and pineapple!

You can choose from 2 slots: 12-2pm or 2.30-4.30pm. We went in at 12pm sharp and got to enjoy their self-serve sushi, seafood, cheese, grapes and crackers.

The actual high tea dishes didnt come until 12.25, and they were served one by one. The beef sliders were a little dry and average tasting, my friend didnt like them as he thought they were too salty but I found them alright. The Smoked Chicken and Cheese Focaccias were almost entirely bread with minimal fillings, the the focaccia itself was dry. Mediterranean Chicken Wrap was eh too. A lot of veggies.

The Tiger Prawns were surprisingly my favourite, given that I’m not a fan of seafood. This was the only time that I actually willingly ate prawns and even ordered more as they were so juicy and big with a delicious sauce. The Chicken Cheese Balls were a little spicy and tasted like nacho cheese, also really average.

On to the sweets, the cakes were alright and the macarons were not bad too. My fav was the chocolate macaron, which was so rich. My friend ate 14 macarons in one sitting so I will never doubt him when he calls himself a macaron connesewer.

The biggest disappointment was the Almond Croissant and Chocolate Croissant, which were dry and doughy. They were not well laminated and tasted really stale. They honestly taste like those packaged pastries you’d get from 7-eleven, but even those taste better.

Overall I didn’t find this to be worth the price. Since the main dishes only come 30 mins after the start time of the buffet, you get less time to try them out and see which ones you like. The tiger prawns were the only dish that I thought were great, everything else was average or not that good.

Wouldn’t return unfortunately, do drop your recommendations for good and affordable high teas!

💰 4 for $24
🤑 Promo code: for $5 off @pickupp.sg

Ive had lots of macarons but never fatcarons, let alone fatFATcarons. Theyre basically macarons with a huge ass filling.

🥥 Ondeh Ondeh (7.2/10)
Comes with coconut cream and a little slice of cake inside. Its pretty sweet but theres a nice fragrance of coconut throughout the whole macaron.

💙 Blueberry (7.2/10)
The fresh blueberries were delightful, though most of the macaron tasted like a regular vanilla macaron.

🍓 Raspberry Pistachio (7/10)
The most unique macaron, I liked the nuttiness of the pistachio cream and the thick raspberry ganache.

🍋 Double Citron (6.7/10)
I find this one to be a bit too sweet cuz of how thick the fillings are. It has a sour and tangy flavour but perhaps it could substitute the icing fillings with something less strong in flavour so its less jelak.

🍞 Bao Platter of 6
📍Ju Hua Tai (@juhuataisg)
📌 9 Duxton Hill
💰 $50++

One of the most beautiful bao platters my undeserving eyes have ever graced. Each bao comes in either a steamed or fried bun and contains a different kind of protein.

🍗 Crispy Chicken Bao
The fried chicken is pretty thick but a little on the tougher side, however I loved the lao gan ma mayo that it came slathered in.

💛 Grilled Eel Bao
Comes with salted egg sauce, I’m not a fan of eel but actually liked this quite a lot. The eel meat was tender and a little mushy while the salted egg was a nice balance of sweet and savoury.

🦀 Soft Shell Crab Bao
Batter on the soft shell crab was really tough, but the general flavours were really nice. The curry sauce was really aromatic and good.

🐚 Scallop Bao
Unfortunately this was extremely tough, the batter was super hard and the scallop was pretty small. However, I really liked the addition of the tobiko, which gave it a bit of a juicy pop.

🍖 Pork Belly Bao
Sooo good, the tender pork pairs perfectly with the crispy fried bun. The lao gan ma mayo and caramelised onions gave the whole bun a robust flavour.

🥩 Beef Rendang Bao
The beef rendang was flavourful and aromatic while the meat was tender. Also, the pickled cabbage added some crunch. Really good!

The buns are also available a la carte, personally found that some buns were definitely better than others but overall not bad!

Probably one of the best raspberry pistachio pastries I’ve had. The pistachio element is really generous and evident, there are bits of crushed pistachio and pistachio butter spread throughout the pastry. The raspberry is tangy and not too sweet and the pastry itself is super buttery and crisp.
