Price: ~17 RM.
Salty. Really salty. That was the first thing I thought to myself when the chicken chop touched my taste bud. Although the chicken chop was rather tender and it had a well fried crispy exterior, the chicken chop could really do with less salt! The mushroom sauce only further aggravated the saltiness! Was in desperate need for water afterwards.
The wedges and coleslaw are really run off the mill and nothing to be raved about.
Strongly suggest that you get the fried chicken chop instead of the grilled one if you were to visit IT Roo. I heard that the grilled chicken chop is sub-par (though I have not personally tried it).
Trivia: IT Roo's cafe's was once awarded the 'best chicken chop in malaysia' title in 2003 iirc.
Price: $9 (per slice); $70 (whole). The cake slices were Y...UGE.
The Meringue was on point 👌🏻. So amazingly fluffy. It was also neither overly sweet nor underwhelmingly bland - the sweetness with on point.
The lemon taste was also just right as it wasn't overpowering. The sponge cake was also fluffy to the perfect degree.
Excellent light desert on a weekend afternoon!
Price: $18. Quite a lovely and light brunch meal with this chorizo frittata. An omelette with potato, ham, red pepper etc, this is just right for those looking for a light meal. The omelette was also fluffy to the right degree!
Price: $12 (waffles with 2 scoops of ice cream). Was in the area and decided to visit Everton creamery for some ice cream and waffles. The waffles was somewhat well made. It was not over mushy and instead had a good crunch to it. The inside were also adequately fluffy. Not the best I've had but certainly not the worst.
The gelato were however only ok. I got the after eight (i.e. Mint) flavor and butterscotch flavor and they were ok. Expected them to be better, and to have a richer taste but they fell a little short of expectations. (I still prefer my Hagen daz tub at home hahaha).
Overall I will likely not visit again unless I'm in the area.
Price: $19.50. Authentic fish and chips from Smiths. The fish was fresh and did not have a single tinge of fishy smell. Unlike the fish and chips from some places where the fish itself would be mushy (and disgusting), the fish here is firm (but not hard). The batter was also crisp, not too thick, and wasn't oily at all! Really, it is actually quite hard to find decent fish and chips in Singapore these days.
The chips were also well made. Unlike most stall, especially chain stalls like MFM where the fries are factory made and usually quite horrible, the chips here are quite evidently home-made from potatoes they buy from the market. The chips were well made and they gave a really large portion too!
If you prefer melt-in-the-mouth type of fish, I would recommend the cod; if you prefer the type that's firmer in texture, then I'll recommend the haddock.
Price:~$15. Visited Sunday folks again to try something different. My friend and I got the hazelnut soft serve with 2 pieces of waffles and 2 toppings. We got the blueberry and buttercrunch(?).
The hazelnut soft serve was light - a little too light for me actually. The hazelnut aroma wasn't strong enough as it lasted only a second and before it's gone. The soft serve wasn't sweet enough either.
The waffles were fluffy on the inside, which was good. But otherwise there's nothing particularly special about the waffles, as expected from an ice cream parlour, rather than an actual waffles shop.
The toppings were delightful though.
At ~$15, this simple desert is on the steep side pricewise, especially given the rather small portion. Would only be back again if I have cravings for soft serve again!
Price:~$27. La nonna is a small restaurant located at holland V and it sells authentic looking Italian dishes including this risotto. The average price per dish is about $25 and so it is on the steep side. However, if you were to visit on the weekdays for lunch, there's the one for one deal which makes it all so worth it! (This 1-for-1 deal is quite a well-kept secret though because not many people know of it)
Risotto is a Italian rice dish cooked in creamy broth. I always enjoyed risottos, and this is no exception. The broth is thick and flavorful, though it can get a little gelat after a while. The rice also had a good texture as it was neither overly mushy nor overly hard.
Perhaps one thing it can improve on is to add some sotong to it to break the gelat-creamy-texture!
Price: $39.90. Jinjja is a Korean fried chicken fast food outlet located in bugis, just beside the entrance of bugis street. As we were lazy to pick and choose what exactly to get, we (five of us) just went for the lazy combo box option. It had 4 large drumsticks, 16 wings, 6 fried gyoza, 2 portions of fries, 1 portion of toboeki, and 4 drinks. As the fast food concept would already have hinted, this Korean fried chicken outlet is really for the fuss free patrons because most of the dishes were average at best. The chicken drumstick and wings are what one would expect from four fingers, as my friend said. Objectively it wasn't bad, but it just isn't any good either. It was so nondescript that I really can't find any special way to describe it. The gyoza was slightly better. It contained prawn paste mixed with veggie, and drizzled on it is this tangy sauce which made the the gyoza the highlight of the meal. The worst of the lot is the toboeki which was hard like rubber. Overall this is really for those seeking for a fuss free and fast Korean fried chicken experience. Expect anything more and you will be disappointed.
One thing I have to commend is its friendly service staff. The box was supposed to contain 16 wings, and to our dismay, we realized and counted that they only gave us 12 pieces after eating more than half. We raised this issue to the service staff and they immediately gave us the 4 we are supposed to have without asking us to prove. So it made the experience quite pleasant.
I wouldn't return here to satisfy my future Korean fried chicken craving, but if you are looking for a fast Korean fried chicken meal and you happen to be in the area, this is for you.
Price: $9. Verdict: light and refreshing. This has 20 layers of paper thin crepe stacked together and with each layer separated by a layer of light pastry cream. This is a good change from the common sponge-based cakes. The cream was light, moderately sweet, and had nice tinge of creamish aroma. The individual crepe layers also had good pastry-like texture. And so the match of the cream with the crepe layers was quite impeccable.
Price: $9.60 (for students). Fish and chips at Sapore at Utown. A pretty ok dish. But what stood out was the infectious friendliness of the boss that can brighten your day :). They serve other dishes like risotto and pasta there also!
Price: RM ~35 for medium size. The medium size is alright for 3 people if all 3 are small eaters. Otherwise get 1 medium for every pair.
The is one of the best (if not the best) curry fish head I've ever had. The curry was fragrant and it had a strong and yet not overly oppressive curry taste. The texture was also perfect as it was neither overly thick nor overly watery. The amount of curry given is also extremely generous - we kept scooping the curry over and over onto our rice and curry never seemed to run out! They also fried tau kees in the curry, which added a good alternative texture to this dish.
My only gripe is the rather small portion of fish given. I guess that's somewhat expected though since fish is expensive by itself.
Would totally visit this again if I'm in JB for another food trip.
Price: RM14.90. Verdict: will visit The Replacement again, but not for this. This churros with salted egg sauce is a bit of a disappointment. The churros were overly oily texture-wise, taste-wise and smell-wise. The salted egg sauce was also not sufficiently sweet. As a result, this dish just fell below (quite far below in fact) what I expected. Nevertheless, the other dish that we tried tasted good, and the other dishes that we didn't try looked good. Another plus point for this establishment is the ambience -- it had nice decor and it was obvious that much attention was paid to it. Would visit again for the other items if I'm in Jb for another food trip!
