Wasnât a big fan of this. The cake texture is fine, not dry but not v moist either, and I couldnât rly taste any goma. The pb was way too thick and was this plasticky layer - neither crunchy or creamy. There were any components in this cake that saved it, sorry.
Tried their caifan once and wasnât a fan, but I wanted to try again bc my colleagues seemed to like it, they said it was one of the better caifans around the area. Glad I tried it again, as I concluded my poor first experience was bc I didnât try their better dishes. My usual caifan combi is gulurou, spinach, and egg/pumpkin. These are not their more outstanding dishes.
This time, we tried the:
- fried calamari (was v crisp with a thin batter and decent calamari texture)
- gulurou (affirmed that itâs ok at best, bc itâs not crunchy or particularly yummy, itâs p meaty, and came with lots of onion / tomato / pineapple / peppers)
- otah (slightly spicy and soft)
- french beans (crunchy and nicely stir fried with a garlicky flavour)
- tofu (also good, soft and fresh with minced meat and a tasty tomato based sauce).
The curry fish head was also not bad, it came bubbling in a large claypot! I canât be objective bc itâs the first time Iâve had curry fish head :p Curry zhup was nice, giving some heat but not overly spicy for me, was aromatic and consistency was good too - not too thin and watery, but not sooo thicc and lemak either. Thereâs lots of veg in there - tomato, pineapple, eggplant, onion and ladyâs finger, and the amount of fish meat was p generous. Fish was thick and meaty, was rather soft. The rice here is harder than usual, so u gotta eat it with the curry!
TLDR: wouldnât mind coming again if in a large group for the curry fish head, and for dishes I would reco the french beans, fried calamari, and tofu.
This was the dark sauce version which my bf had - slightly heavier flavours, it's not too salty tho. They give just enough sauce such that each piece is coated and not drenched! I'll stick to the non-dark sauce version bc that one is just nice! I feel like I appreciate lighter flavours compared to the average Singaporean, so maybe others will find the dark sauce one more satisfying.
It's guuud! The mhk is different from my fav stall (ah yi at marsiling mall) - this one is rolled into sheets before being hand-pulled into mhk pieces. V different textures; this one is still chewy but in a flattened sheet kind of way, ah yi's is more thicc bc they donât roll it flat.
Mine was the non-dark sauce dry version, which meant the only sauce was the minced meat sauce, but it was still appropriately saucey. Super flavourful, lots of shallots and ikan bilis and lard pieces - will ask for less lard & shallots next time bc I don't prefer so much. Onsen egg is perfectly done with a runny yolk!!
Also a shoutout to the SOUP with mani cai which had a v nice pleasant light mani cai flavour. We stan mhk stalls that use the authentic veg of choice - mani cai!!
Mochi is nice! Chewy and stretchy, p comparable to the nice mochi bread shopsâ mochi (muyoo, WPC). Red bean filling tastes q pure / natural, not rly sweetened, which I like.
This has been the best version of their bread Iâve tried - I find that their bread, while soft, typically has a weird yeasty smell. This is my third time trying (ok their shop is rly convenient for me, Iâm not usually that inclined to try again after a 2nd bad experience) and the first 2 times the unpleasant yeasty smell was quite a turnoff, but this time it was much better, albeit still a little yeasty. This is a reminder to myself that my sis and I will not be trying their breads anymore! If u can overlook the bread taste the filling (this red bean one in particular, canât be sure of all) is actually pretty ideal - good mochi & lightly sweetened red bean.
The description on the tag that came with this was âmoist soft cake with fruity brandyâ - it was indeed soft and moist! Texture was really nice. Loved the depth of flavour. A warm/spiced flavour, slightly alcoholic & sweet. Think fruit cakes have a bad rep bc of the dry crumb / unpleasant dried fruit bits (that get stuck in ur teeth đ˘) but this cake has none of that. Bot sure what exactly is in there but there's definitely raisins and figs - big love for figs be of how naturally sweet it is + the crunchy seeds. Everyone at the Christmas party enjoyed it!
Liked the gooey lava-ish almond filling/frangipane in this! And the crisp edges. But Iâve had better, this was kinda average.
KA was a tad too sweet as expected but this was a bit more bready than other KAs Iâve tried! it has a pleasant buttery sweet flavour, and was super flaky / sufficiently crisp. Only thing is that some of the sugar crystals were a bit hard. Definitely share this bc it can get a little sweet.
The mortabella is a Dec special and it comes with arugula walnut pesto, antipasto salad, mortadella & turkey ham, gin infused cherry jam, and provolone. This was my fav out of the 3!! Itâs not a hot bagel option but this was still sooo good :â) The components were very nicely balanced, and I particularly enjoyed the pesto and cherry jam (which wasnât very gin-ish but it tasted a bit like a aged balsamic to me, except it was more sweet than tart compared to balsamic). I also rly liked the choice of cheese, it was a hard cheese that wasnât v sharp/salty but had a nice milky flavour. Definitely would wna have it again before December ends!
The avo baco was great too, with avo, bacon, smoked garlic aioli, tomatoes, hippie greens, and a sunny side up. Admittedly the bacon was not my favourite - was a bit dry, and theyâre v generous with the meat so it also got a bit salty for me. But the rest of the components were great - the sauce was so tasty! Also rly enjoyed the greens for some reason đ
The lox is the classic, but I wouldnât have ordered it if I wasnât sharing with my friends oops :x While it was still p decent bc the components were cold and q refreshing - smoked salmon (they r v generous and gave a mini mountain, smoked salmon lovers u will rejoice), scallion cream cheese, capers, onions, lemon juice, and tomatoes, it can get a bit one-dimensional. But the 4 of us shared 3 bagels, so it meant we got 1/4 bagel for each flavour, which we all agreed that 1/4 of the lox was the most optimal size for us; any portion bigger it would have been too cloying. We did think we could finish a whole mortabella ourselves tho đ¤Ş
Anyway portion sizes are always huge here - we found that half is too little but a full bagel is too much. So the solution was to find 3 others to share with u, who can agree on 3 bagel flavours. Cut each bagel into quarters so each of you can enjoy 3 x 1/4 bagels. 3/4 bagels was indeed the optimal bagel portion for us, and we got to try 3 diff flavours too!
Ahh one of my fav liushabaos in sg are from imperial. The ratio of liusha to bao is good - thereâs enough bao and is filled with oozy, savoury sweet lava liusha. V hard to share unless u bite properly (donât tear)! I always enjoy this but this round I thought it had a slightly strange alkaline smell, I donât know why but letâs hope itâs a one off thing :-(
This was decent, itâs very beany and has decently tender pork belly inside. We didnât add sauce so maybe thatâs why itâs on the plainer side of things which weâre okay with! Wonât order agn haha honestly I ordered wrongly - meant to get the steamed glutinous rice in lotus leaf, just that I couldnât find it on their online ordering system (am I an IT idiot đ˘) Will just ask for the physical menu next time!
I think this isnât commonly ordered by many but I love it so much!! Sooo fluffy and soft and jiggly, with a wonderful brown sugar flavour without it being too sweet. Compared to five star dim sum (itâs the dimsum I had most recently before this), this has a richer molasses flavour. Texture was also more cake-like & delicate. I liked both but I preferred this!
