Yakun toast may no longer be $2.40 ala carte, but this one still is! Standards are a little inconsistent here tho, Iāve gotten limp and non-crispy toast before, but thankfully this time the toast was rather crisp and toasty. I like the kaya here - itās pretty aromatic and is extra shiok with the butter bits spread throughout the toast. A satisfying breakfast!
Although the soup is definitely not as robust and é²ē compared to hankee / piao ji, itās pretty decent. The fish slices were rather large and succulent, was pleasantly surprised! Had a nice bite to it, and didnāt have any foul fishy smell. Quite a lot of bai cai in it too. My friend and I both particularly enjoyed the fried fish, with the crunchy batter encasing the soft flaky fish within - was rather yummy! In terms of fish soups I donāt think this is anything spectacular, but idm eating this again, and if u go please get both the fried & sliced fish option. Also the auntie is pretty friendly and u can use cdc vouchers here too! Yay!
Was quite meh - the rice wasnāt very plump nor sticky like how typical Japanese rice is supposed to be; the chicken cubes were decently tender and eggs runny, but somehow the dish tasted very flat. The sauce was runny but not too sweet/salty, but it made the rice taste a bit like wet rice lol. Wished there were more stewy soft caramelised onions to add more flavour! Although it wasnāt terrible, itās still a meh and I wouldnāt recommend, will not order again too. Go for their karaage / curry, that looks better! The udon my friend ordered was decent only.
Had this at their new Koufu HQ outlet at woodlands! Thought this was a pretty decent bowl of noodles, I particularly liked the fragrant shallot oil the noodles were tossed in, tho it got a bit too oily at the end. Minced meat was tasty but not the most tender, while charsiew was shockingly red (I donāt rly like such red charsiew bc they tend to be v dry) but tasted alright - not dry but rather lean and not very juicy. The Kampua noodles were not as springy as I would have liked, but it was not overcooked and had a bite to it. I still prefer the Kampua noodles from Swan City @ Amoy hawker but this is an okay rendition! Maybe some veg would be great.
The bread smells v fermenty, a rather unique scent - presumably bc of the wine-soaked dried longan smoked using an ancient technique (according to WPC). The longan has a nice dark fermented flavour, not super juicy but not dry either. Bread is chewy and soft w a soft crust and crunchy walnuts. Texture is a but like a European bread? Gives me some Duke/Gokoku vibes. Also liked that there was a p generous amount of dried longan & walnuts, with at least 1 of either in every bite. Was q an enjoyable loaf.
Loved the crispy thin skirt around the generously-filled dumplings!! While the meat filling (which had scallions) was decently tasty and meaty, it could have been juicier for a more shiok experience. Still I wouldnāt mind having this again, and at this price point the queue is pretty justifiable.
All 3 of my planned options for lunch at chinatown complex were closed, so I ventured around the hawker centre and found a queue forming at this stall and I went for it! The caifan is rather decent but I didnāt find it particularly amazing. The rice is average; sweet and sour pork was alright but I would prefer if it were crunchier. I liked the cabbage w black fungus and carrots which were nicely cooked - soft but slightly crunchy, as well as the ytf items (2 types of stuffed taupok) which were juicy with a bouncy paste. Canāt say I would be compelled to walk 15 mins here just for this, but it is rather light on the palate and tasted quite homely so thatās probably what the folks in the queue were queueing for. Worth a try!
First time trying their jjampong! The only soup dish from obba Iāve had is their tofu stew. The soup had a reasonably seafoody taste, and wasnāt too salty nor very spicy, so itās pretty drinkable. Seafood (mussels, cuttlefish, shrimp) were quite bouncy and not overcooked, decent! For the veggies, thereās black fungus, shimeiji mushrooms, cabbage, onions, cucumbers, but I thought the amount could have been slightlyy more generous as I do love my veggies. Noodles were quite nua so I wasnāt too impressed.
No I did not misspell it, this is how itās spelt on the menu š Having tried both this (express outlet) and the jjm at their Tanjong Pagar outlet, the clear winner goes to the one at tjpg. The noodles here are a lot softer, lacks that chewy texture. The sauce is also not as nice - the tjpg sauce has more depth of flavour and that wokhei smokiness that I really enjoyed. This was still not bad tho, itās savoury-sweet and with soft onions and minced meat. Iām actually quite happy with the portion size (slightly smaller than the tjpg/bukit timah) bc it was filling but I didnāt feel ridics full/like bursting after the meal!
The deep fried pork was crunchy, but rather bland on itās own - the ideal piece was one that was half-coated in the sweet & slightly tangy sauce, so that thereās flavour + crunch. Would have preferred if the meat was at least seasoned just a bit, and the sauce more tangy. The ratio of batter to meat was ~1:1, I was ok bc at least it was freshly fried and crunchy, but it lacks that meatiness. Also the pork was kinda dry, sad. Carrots were raw af, but the raw onions & cucumber were nice to chomp on, as some sort of a palate cleanser. Itās an ok dish I guess, I wasnāt dissatisfied but Iāve had better.
Wasnāt expecting to like this bc the description mentioned ārose garden cakeā, but thankfully there is no rose flavour in it, it just has piped cream roses. This was good as usual, with light and smooth and melty cream cheese layers - for this cake thereās an even better proportion of creamy layers to cheesecake. Flavour combi was nice! The white peach bits within the cake gave a refreshing fruity brightness to the cake, cutting through the smooth cream cheese layers (even tho it was already quite light and not jelat). I donāt really like jelly layers on cake but this was quite alright. I think I might like this marginally better than the og double fromage!
This was quite yummy! The mascarpone cream cheese layer on top was melt-in-the-mouth and creamy, but still pretty light and not cloying nor too sweet. It was v smooth, almost like an ice cream. I liked that there was a slightly higher proportion of that compared to the bottom soufflĆ© cheesecake layer which was q fluffy. Itās quite small and pricey but itās worth the price and good for sharing! My team enjoyed it.
