Freshy fried churros [S$9.90] in old school vanilla ice cream and chocolate sauce Craftsmen Specialty Coffee on 173 Thomson Road, Singapore. Opposite United Square Shopping Mall. Food wise average, however, their coffee is a redeeming factor.
While certainly not a cake in any way, this crisp puff pastry concealed cinnamon-y apple-y goodness that went so well with that scoop of vanilla ice cream. A nice hot/cold way to end the meal, it reminded me of Christmas.
This is sneakily hidden in the top floor food court at Square 2. I love love love their cod fish! The sashimi is also very fresh and well cut (the chef is an authentic Japanese chef) and the prices are pretty reasonable. They also have Wagyu Beef.
Back at their smaller outlet! The clay pot meetaimak still has a lot of msg I feel. Felt like I was very thirsty throughout the wholeeeeee meal! Salted egg chicken was chicken shreds and didn't have much meat :/ I'll only be back if I've a huge craving for meetaimak again - too much msg!
As a kid in the 90s, Far East Plaza was our place to shop for cheap garb ( before we had money to fly to bkk for shopping trips). Being poor students, we had to scrimp to buy hip clothes and accessories. So when we are hungry, we just head upstairs to 4th floor & 5th floor for cheap orchard road food galore. This fried mee tai mak is the lower GI option of char kway teow. It taste almost exactly the same, but instead of hum, you get tasty shiitake mushrooms instead. This is still as delicious many years down. 😋 #hawkerpedia
I read from some food reviewer that there is very cheap and good crab Beehoon in Toa Payoh and I was scratching my head to think...where it is that I have not heard of in Toa Payoh that serves good food?!?
So I got off my high horse to googled a little and read some more reviews to get a fuller picture of what's happening.
So it turned out that it's true that there is a stall in a Coffeeshop in Toa Payoh that serves up a Claypot worth of crab Beehoon soup that can fight the famous Mellben and Uncle Leong's ones. It is opened by the chef who brought us Don's Personal Pie. But the shocker is not that some reviewers find it BETTER than the famous Mellben's and Uncle Leong's ones BUT the fact that each Claypot is only $20 each! When I read this, I was like...sure another?!?
So tonight I took my hubby that reading about the place is no good, I HAD to check it out for myself. So hubby and I went down for an early dinner at 6pm to beat the dinner crowd. But the crowd obviously also thought like me and every table in the Coffeeshop is taken. And I so mean EVERY TABLE. I was shocked that a Coffeeshop can be so well occupied!
2nd shocking news was that they have no more crabs! The stall uncle explained that there was a shipment of crabs that didn't arrive from Sri Lanka so they were sold out. I stood there stun like vegetable and it took me a while to realize that it's not the end of my world and the stall do sell other seafood selections other than crabs. Phew! So I 'settled' for Prawn Beehoon Soup and Black Pepper Prawn Beehoon.
Prawn Beehoon soup was served up in a Claypot but it's just a serving pot, the food is not cooked IN the Claypot. So actually, don't play with my feelings and just use a normal bowl yah? For $10, the Claypot had 3 fairly large prawns, 2 juicy large scallops and fishcake slices. The winner for me was the soup! I appreciated the fact that it was full bodied in taste and slightly herbal too! I could taste the tang Gui in it and it complemented the prawns very well. One Claypot could feed 2 small eaters or just me. I couldn't stop eating and I drained every drop of the good soup!
I have had crab Beehoon soup in Mellben quite a few times and I must say that Don's soup is not as flavourful as Mellben's but I also didn't need to drink lots of water tonight. I remember Mellben's soup was yummy but laden with MSG too. So in conclusion, I would prefer to lap up Don's awesome soup any time, any day, and twice on Sunday's.
I am such a super fan at this point!

There's just something magical about this cauldron of goodies that makes me crave for it over and over again. This time round I was not able to eat it as I was feeling under the weather and I can only see my foodie friends enjoy it as they slurp down bowls and bowls of it. It was painful but an added motivation for me to recover quickly so that I can return for it soon.

Having tried quite a number of different Mille crepe cakes in Singapore, Chateraise's best seller White Zebra has a softer texture though the pastry cream is slightly sweeter and does not harden after being refrigerated. It also differs with its light sponge cake base and the price is an absolute steal ($4.70/slice).
If you're on a budget but craving some finger-licking good crabs, head over to this unassuming coffeeshop stall in Hougang. Apart from regular zi char fare, they also serve Sri Lankan crabs ($25 for three smaller crabs, $30 for two medium, $40 for two large), cooked in a variety of styles including salted egg yolk (additional $3), black pepper and chilli. The pricing system can get confusing but fret not — in our opinion, two medium crabs is just enough for two hungry tummies. Be sure to order the Mantou ($2 for six) to mop up the juices and gravy!
This not only looked appealing because they are gold! But they tasted great. Having said that, some of you might find it rather sweet. Still an awesome experience!

Worth the calories: I can’t really control myself over desserts. I guess I am partially influenced by my girlfriend choice of desserts which happens to be cakes.
