Greatly enjoyed the fusion flavours in this fried tofu bowl ($9.90+)!! The truffle scrambled egg is silky smooth and fragrant. The tofu had a crispy battered crust and was topped by some braised mushrooms!
Decided to give this new joint a shot and was very pleasantly surprised by the quality of its food! The beef bowl ($10.90+) features tender sliced beef simmered in shoyu sauce - whilst a little fatty, it was extremely soft and bursting with flavour! The broccoli was nicely roasted with some spices. It was balanced with the sweetness from caramelised onions and acidity from pickles!
Filled this jumbo cup ($10) with rum & raisin, tiramisu and 96% sugar free chocolate. The rum & raisin lacked any alcohol and instead had a chemical aftertaste. The chocolate was thick and reminiscent of baking chocolate, but still exceedingly sweet - its name is a misnomer! The tiramisu fared the best, with a slight bitterness that balanced the flavours. Doubt I’d be making a return visit even if the steep prices are made a tad more palatable with Burpple’s one for one - this was a decidedly unsatisfying ice cream shop.
Was probably a little ambitious when purchasing the jumbo cup ($10) - its big enough to feed a few people! Opted for berry cheesecake, lychee, mango and passionfruit in this cup. The berry cheesecake was a huge miss with the unpleasant taste of instant creamer, whilst the lychee disappointed with the syrupy sweetness of cordial. Our favourite was the passionfruit - extremely tart and a refreshing change!
The sliced fish soup ($5) here is a little pricey but well worth it! They are very generous with their fish and vegetables, and the soup is extremely flavourful. Love that their meesua ($0.50) has a great bite and soaks up the soup nicely!
My friend raved about Hvala’s buttermilk waffles ($11.80+), and they were truly very good!! The price is a tad steep, but well worth every penny. The waffles are crisp on the outside and delightfully chewy on the inside. Topped with a drizzle of maple syrup, it’s definitely good enough to eat on its own! Opted for matcha ice cream - it was well rounded and strongly flavoured, so a little goes a long way. Would happily return for this!
Hvala ran out of dirty genmaicha by mid afternoon on a weekday, so we grudgingly opted for a matcha hojicha latte ($5.80+) instead. It is thick and lightly sweetened, with a lingering bitter finish. Pity that the hojicha is not very evident. Portion is a tad small but it is very satisfying!
Opted to try their toast set with more unique flavours like matcha milk and earl grey ($5.30)! The spreads are creamy and sweet, with a subtle tea flavour. Felt that the toast could have been a bit more crisp! Best part of the meal was definitely their kopi - thick, strong coffee flavour and not too sweet ☕️
Rounded off the burpple beyond set ($32++) with tres leches - an airy coconut cake that soaks up the condensed milk, topped with sweet desiccated coconut and tart pineapple compote. Thought this might get quite overwhelming but we really enjoyed it! The flavours meld very nicely, with a mix of sweet & sour. The cream was a nice addition too! Belly was very happy to end off with this dessert. Only complaint is that this portion for 2 is really small - about half of the ala carte item, from what we observed.
As part of the burpple beyond set ($32++), we had the Latino pasta. The tomato sauce is earthy and a tad sweet, vastly distinct from the typical Italian sauces. It was really interesting! Could do with more crab meat and a larger portion, since this plate is meant to be shared amongst 2.
The third item served from the burpple beyond set ($32++) was chicken tacos. We were astonished by how good these were!! The soft flour tortilla was layered with warm, spiced chicken cubes and cold vegetables. The dish had great juxtaposition of textures and flavours. The chicken was very well marinated! Really enjoyed this dish, and would return just to try more of their tacos!!
The burpple beyond set ($32++) comes with 2 tapas - nachos and quinoa salad! The warm corn chips were paired with sour cream and guacamole. The salad features fried quinoa, mixed with tangy tomatoes, sharp onions and sweet beans. It was topped with crumbs of cotija cheese, which really packed a punch. It was a really delightful mix of flavours and textures!
