It's my nth visit here to Nesuto! Their cakes never go wrong. They aren't superb in my opinion, but make a great pairing with their hot lychee tea (I've a major weakness for that!).
This time round, I've got the matcha cake &lychee + rose cake to try..
The bottom layer of the matcha cake is soaked and tastes so moist! The matcha cream has a slight bitterness from the matcha used and mhmmmmm i like that.
As for the lychee + rose cake, the outer shell exerts a light lychee scent which i absolutely adore! Behind that house some cream and layers of raspberry and lychee jelly. Would prefer if the jelly flavours are kept light.
Best way to end off? With the hot lychee tea! Its subtle, fruity fragrance is so alluring. Tastes clean and not "siap siap"!
In the night, they destructure the ingredients found in a bowl of wanton mee &serve them tapas style. Think small plates of XO fried wantons, roasted pork, char siew, kailan etc. There's also the staple - meekia for you to go along these savoury dishes.
The roasted pork features a crackling skin &is served with some sweet dipping sauce (tastes like the peking duck sauce! loved this &even asked for a second serving). The charsiew is well-glazed &has a contrasting texture to the roasted pork! This is more tender and juicy. Both meat dishes are highly recommended to be shared as they tend to be too heavy towards the end.
What surprised me was the broth served to every customer, in a metal jug. It's complimentary BUT IT TASTES NOTHING LIKE YOUR USUAL BLAND WANTON MEE SOUP. THIS IS SO LIGHT &SWEET. Perfect to wash down the grease.
Good place for chilling after work without breaking the bank, especially with Burpple Beyond's 1 for 1 deal here! They're so flexible and allow any food on the menu to be considered for the 1 for 1.
However, I guess when i crave for wanton mee, this won't come to mind as it's on the contemporary end.
They dont have a huge selection, just about 8 flavours. You'll see the boss sending some nuts into the oven. They bake those pistachios &hazelnuts in-house!
MUST TRY: THEIR PISTACHIO ICE CREAM. Really bursting in fragrance of those lil' green nuts. Not too sweet. The texture is not as sticky as the usual artisan gelato. This is smoother (which also means it melts alil faster).
This is their rendition of Taiwanese Lu Rou Fan! Instead of the usual minced pork, here they present to you a glorious slab of pork belly. It's tender and has a good fat-meat ratio. I could taste the star anise used to braise it. Also, do stir the sous vide egg into your lard rice! It gives that beautiful, slightly creamy and smooth texture.
This bowl costs $11.55 aft svc charge; a little steep for a bowl of lu rou fan but considering that it's a hipster one, could be a good weekly indulgence for lunch!
The place has really pinterest-worthy interior! the burgers lack meat juices but thankfully they’ve an array of sauces available (orange sauce, vegan mayo, bbq &chilli). Mint-elderflower thirst quencher is ace ✨ Lunch set is really value for money - includes burger, side, thirst quencher &a hot beverage (post meal) for just +$5.
Apart from those creamy western soups, they also serve popiahs &some stews like sesame chicken, thai red curry chicken etc.
I had a Thai Red Curry Chicken Set, comprising a bowl of mixed grains, mini salad &hot genmaicha tea. I LOVE THE RICE. Those fat chewy barley gave the rice a slight tinge of sweetness. The curry was not too oily and is real thick! (yayyy)
Added on a traditional popiah which was absolutely proven to be a wise decision. It's densely packed with turnip, cucumber shreds, egg etc.. and lotsa crispy bits! They dont slice their popiah up, so enjoy eating it like a wrap! The hot tea makes the meal complete.
SAY YASS TO SLURPY KWAYTIAO!
They've crayfishes, prawns, chicken available as toppings for your ipoh horfun. Featured is a Prawn &Chicken combo, with additional vegetables.
Love how gooey the gravy is, coating the kwaytiao so nicely and giving it a smooth slurpy texture. Chicken is tender and the prawns are fresh &meaty!
For all the kwaytiao fanatics out there!
The nasi lemak pizza consists of the key elements of a plate of nasi lemak - ikan bilis, cucumber, sambal chilli, chicken chunks &egg. The dough could have been better, it tasted alittle bread-like at the edges.
The mussels are from local farms and are really huge! Taste wise, they aren't as firm &supple. The broth was in a cloudy brown colour, not the usual sweet and clear white wine.
The staff were really nice! We asked if we could be given more mentaiko mayo for our fries. They readily agreed and even told us to say "Stop" only when it's enough while they squeeze the condiment on our basket of fat fries.
50% for selected timings on Chope! &also, 1 for 1 pizza on Burpple Beyond!
Pictured is their Signature Tendon Set - tendon, mini chawanmushi &miso soup for $14.9++
The tempura pieces were arranged nicely and resembled a cow's head! There's a huge piece of tempura fish, along with sotong, shiitake mushroom, brinjal, long beans, baby corn &prawns.
Really filling &i couldn't even finish the rice. Taste wise, the batter could have been more light and crisp. I found myself removing some of the tempura batter towards the last few pieces.
Had truffle scrambled eggs atop sourdough bread. When i tried to slice the bread, the hardness of it left me in semi-shock. It's like a rock! Tell me how awkward it is to make that loud sound of knocking your utensils onto the plate.. My friend's sourdough was of the right texture thou. Is it that mine was over toasted?
Overall, coffee &food (based on my friend's bread) were alright. Nothing to shout about.
A snaking long queue would be the easiest way to spot the stall! Pls try to reach before 1pm on weekends, else very likely to be sold out (happened to me twice, sobs).
The fish flakes are rather dry but give it a good stir and mix into the smooth gravy! You'll be surprised at how well the dry fishes are in giving the noodles another dimension in terms of texture. I've never found clumps of starch in their lormee. The gravy is always of the right consistency; not too thick, not too watery.
p/s: i always put more vinegar to it, giving it a slight sour kick! one of my favourite weekend breakfast food ♡
The soy sauce chicken here tastes different from other ones that I've tried elsewhere. The chicken here has a stronger soya sauce taste as opposed to others that usually exert a lighter soya sauce scent and mixed with rose wine. This is purely soya goodness.
The meat is firm yet tender, really well marinated too!
