Check out my sprouting cilantro haha.
The veggie mandu was a firm favourite! Filled with shitake mushrooms, spinach, tofu and Korean pickles and gochujang, it really packed a punch. The dumplings sit on creamy garlic aioli — though delicious with or without.
Featuring the Original dumplings, the spicy sichuan is served on not so spicy ma la sauce. It’s got a mildly peppery taste, and is thoroughly flavourful. But if you’re into ma la, manage your expectations because this can definitely do with more tongue-numbing action!
Curry spiced-pork, cauliflower and labneh? I’m solddddd. Couldn’t really discern cauli in the filling, but the seasoning for the pork was spot-on. Just make sure to slather the dumpling in lots of labneh so it doesn’t come off too dry.
Crisp-skinned and served with only a drizzle of balsamic vinaigrette and rocket, this one had smoked duck, hoisin mustard and caramelised leek. Very savoury and yums, although it could have done with just a few more drops of balsamic!
Finally got to try one of these! Verdict: As good as everyone says it is. The seaweed shell cracks at the bite of your teeth, and that briny combination of medium-cooked salmon cubes, ikura and mayo is a mouthful of delish.
My favourite kind of roast pork involves ultra crisp, crackling skin, soft and tender lean meat and just the right bit of melt-in-the-mouth fat.
This is it. I just wish they had more! Aunty says they roast it in-house to serve with their curry noodles, and so there aren’t too many portions to spare daily.
Hidden gem alert! This neighbourhood joint in industrial Puchong does one great dish (and that’s all it needs). You can get their curry noodles with a plethora of toppings, from seafood to roast pork and fish paste - in addition to the usual taufupok, fu chuk, long beans, pork skin and cockles.
The broth is thin but nonetheless flavourful and umami-packed. Best enjoyed with mee hoon methinks!
For a meaty main, go for this chicken curry! Expect tender, fall-off-the-bone thigh meat swimming in that spicy, zingy gravy. It is, however, on the runnier side, which I’ve noticed with Keralan curries.
Good for two, this veggie-loaded biryani came piping hot, moist and fragrant. It has a mildly sweet and nfruity finish too! The star is cashew — as with all of the other must-orders at this new Keralan spot in Bangsar.
Pretty good value for money in the city centre. The set will definitely fill you up, with five nigiri, a cucumber maki, takoyaki, chawanmushi, salad and soba. The salmon and tuna were both melt-in-the-mouth fresh, but can’t say the same for the other nigiris. Try coming back for those two!
Note that open-space concept at Nori is almost food court-like, so it’s not very private (unless you opt for the outdoor smoking terrace).
Such a delicious snack! When feeling peckish in Gardens, please stop here and grab a mini croissant - granted it’s not super warm and crisp, but the flavour is there and that wasabi mayo hits the spot! Also popular are the salted egg yolk mini croissants.
Tucked along the incredibly quiet at night Jalan Kamunting, the new Mex-meets-Mediterranean Joloko is quite the find. Expect hip, neon-lit vibes in the bar, and lush tropical surroundings in the back. Ordered this as a late night snack. The hummus is wonderful; creamy and nutty with a sweet finish. Was a tad disappointed by the tough, chewy flatbread but I’m hoping it was only cos we went towards closing time!
