Attended my second wedding for this covid period ever since circuit breaker 2020. Was at holiday inn orchard last year. This time round was at holiday inn atrium. I must say for both holiday inn outlets, i was super famished after the wedding reception meal. Plus the food was tasty!! 👍🏻Just that the happiness platter wasnt really happiness because we only got 1-2 slices of each items. For pre covid, we could have more servings of the specific items we wanted 🤣

Was in the sembawang area so decided to give sembawang traditional claypot rice a try (since i could get white beehoon from white restaurant at all areas in Singapore!) the wait for the claypot rice was around 30mins on a sat afternoon. And the restaurant was quite popular and packed till we were seated at the back of the store along the back alleys. This is the medium size portion ($13.80 nett) for 2 pax. While the chicken looks dry upon first look and in photo, it actually was quite tender and soft! Love the spicy chilli sauce given to accompany it too! Will recommend to give this place a try if you are around this area!

Back again to Chen's Mapo Tofu for a revisit after 4 years!

And again, I couldnt decide on which items to get so we got the half half dan dan mian and mapo tofu don ($14). Also got a calamansi drink ($3) and fried veg and chicken gyozas ($5 for 3 piece) to complete the meal! The prices are nett with no further svc charge or gst!

I recalled that the mapo tofu was SUPER SPICY MALA , not the kind that our singaporean taste buds are used to. and yep, it is still as mala spicy, even at level 1 spiciness! It is not the sweet mapo tofu that we typically get at tze char stalls, but just super mala, is more spicy mala than the malaxiangguo! be warned, not kids-friendly unless your kid can take spice well!

The dan dan mian was also slightly spicy, but peanut taste of the sauce was more pronounced! Fried gyoza was good with the mayo dip given!

i must say the prices have increased quite alot. based on my review for the visit 4 years ago, the same half half set (comes with drink) was only $10.80! (Hehe my historical food reviews help provide me with such useful insights lol)

On the other hand, i quite enjoyed the grilled catfish ($6.50) which came with crusty exterior and the creamy dill sauce was good but not enough for the whole portion of fish. The fries that we got for this dish was just very fried and overly salty though.

Have been wanting to try out the food at Wild Olives (Pasir Ris Central Hawker Centre) for more than 2 years! Finally tried it recently, but having set my expectations too high, I think i will only eat it once and that's it, especially when we had to wait in line for 1 hour!

Wanted to try the mushroom soup and mashed potato but it was already sold out by the time we ordered on a sat evening. Tried the most popular grilled chicken chop with mushroom rice and grilled herb potatoes ($5.90), but uh it tasted pretty normal to me, not mindblowing. The chicken chop was tender, but it did not have much marination. The mushroom rice which I was very keen on trying turned out to taste something like dry glutinuous rice (luo mi fan) to me, with a very heavy shallot oil taste. The grilled herb potatoes was more like the korean ja jiang mian kind/ dark soya sauce, and I found it toooo salty! There was no herby taste at all? haha

one word that summarise this visit = salty. haha it left us soo thirsty that we had to buy a bottle of water from the drinks stall haha. Plus, I always dont get stores which make customers stand in line to wait. Why not take the orders and have a queue calling system to call customers when food is ready? To me, it is just making the stall seem very popular so that more ppl will be curious and join in the queue. As a customer, it is not a nice experience to stand in line to wait for 1 hour?

But ok la the food was affordable. If no queue can eat.

The famous Pao Fan Paradise (泡饭天) by T.K Kitchen has now opened a second new outlet at 107 Rowell Road! 🎉

For easties, you no longer need to travel all the way to the west side Teban Gardens to enjoy the most delicious pao fan in Singapore!

What is different about the outlet at 107 Rowell Road is that they now serve single portion of the paofan for 1 pax! So you no longer need to jio your whole big group down to dine together to enjoy it! Perfect for the current dining season where dine-in is still capped at 2 pax.

Here are the dishes which I tried:

🐥Ginseng Chicken Pao Fan: During my last visit to the Teban Gardens outlet, the ginseng chicken was sold out by the time we visited. Hence we were super excited to try it this time! One whole chicken leg is given for this dish with many different kind of mushrooms! In case you are fretting that the ginseng taste will be too strong, fret not as this soup broth is more of the herbal kind, and the ginseng isnt too overpowering.

🦀Crabmeat Pao Fan: This dish has all the seafood items all in one - crabmeat, sliced fish, scallops, clams and fresh prawns! Very convenient to eat as well as the crabmeat are already peeled. So if you are lazy to peel the flower crabs, get this! Also, special shoutout to this soup base which was bursting in umami!

🐖Red Wine Pork Ribs: Similar to the Teban Gardens Outlet, this dish will be served with a fireshow! Very tender juicy pork ribs! This dish never disappoint!

🍄Fried enoki mushrooms: The batter used for this fried enoki mushrooms is well marinated, with red chilli pepper powder to spice things up!

Besides their signature pao fan dishes and red wine pork ribs, they also serve Partea bubbletea drinks here as well! Perfect refreshing cooling drinks to complete your meal!
🌹Rose Pu’er Fruit Tea: Very fragrant drink with many big pieces of mangoes and pineapple with passion fruit pulp!
🍑Winter Peach Green Tea: Comes with the white chewy pearls!

📍Head on down to 107 Rowell Road to try these dishes now!
