On a random Saturday evening the family decided to #treatyoselfs with a dinner at the masses. Easily this comes in as one of the better dinners of 2022, the fusion fine dining like dishes here are stellar.
Turning any non-vegetables eaters into converts is this purple cabbage dish topped with scallop meat and ikura, in pool of dashi beurre blanc with dashes of ikura green oil and prawn head butter. Can I hear someone say fancy deliciousness?
And if you’ve not tried charsiew lamb you get to try exactly that here, lamb ribs meat seasoned with the familiar Chinese rub.
Nicely segueing to some show-stopping mains, my heart leaped in joy at the Quail & Foie Gras Pithivier. As if executing flawless puff pastry sheets are not commendable enough you get tender quail meat and the king of indulgence in foie gras; paired with tangy apple balsamico to cut through the richness. I cannot forget this dish.
We also had the Braised Claypot Angus Beef Cheek and Wagyu Tri Tip (160g) for the beef loving males of the family, we all agreed you get a bang for your buck with these dishes.
Because we stuffed ourselves heartily with homemade bread starters and an order of the wok hey rice noodles, there was no space for desserts but i am looking forward to a return visit for part 2 of a great meal.

We recently gladly welcome an additional “pair of chopsticks” at family meals for a lack better way to put it - go figure. And I thought it should be a good way to share a meal here at Offshore, where we could all get our stomachs filled with the seafood bucket on burpplebeyond.
You get to choose how the sauces you want your seafood to be done in. We got the cream seaweed and korean gochujang sauces, the former was quite a tastily ingenious option while the latter was lacklustre. I was right about the filled stomachs when we finished most of the 1 for 1 seafood buckets and enjoyed the free flow cooked food that came complimentary with the meal.
Mum said the seafood here was fresh and I thought this was a great place for the hungry and big eaters with “free flow”; while getting a crustacean meal that balanced between affordability and quality.
On an off day I can find myself here at Bishan on a Tuesday afternoon which felt nice. Better yet they serve a good cuppa black coffee at Covet along with BakeHaus croissants that I’ve been meaning to try but haven’t had the chance to head down to Owen road for. My almond croissant was reliable and tend towards a bread like sort of croissant instead of the flaky butter variant, if I’m make sense.
The place also has a great ambience to get some work done.
Caught myself almost becoming an addict to scrolling on Chope but it has led me to discover that a tapas restaurant has opened shop in my humble neighbour, yes the deserted east of Singapore: Pasir Ris. It is still peculiar to find such a cuisine in the heartlands so I told mum we should walk over to try it. The
menu is interesting with some Asian influence, think patata bravas with a sambal sauce. There are more traditional tapas like the bikini, roasted octopus and Brussels sprout we had; they were nice but each with a flaw. For example I joked with mum that the sandwich bread felt like toasted gardenia white bread and the octopus was tenderised with a nice texture but didn’t feel fresh. Don’t get me wrong gardenia bread is not bad but my spoilt palate is more accustomed to daily baked bread. Also the sweetened brussel sprout was a nice rendition but was swimming in a small pool of oil at the bottom.
Mum suggested we give the mains a chance with the full family to form our conclusive verdict of the place. I wonder which weekend that will be.

Back at Ambling Turtle that I discovered only because of Burpplebeyond, today we tried the above tarts and they were good. I personally preferred the tart and sweet yuzu cheese just because of the nature of the flavours, but the Pula Hitam tart stayed true to the Asian dessert with a black glutinous rice paste as filling and a layer of thickened coconut cream as a top blanket.
Do note that the one for one beverages are only available for dine in and not takeaways which I found strange considering the latter would free up space where appropriate.

First the bakery offers my definition of the best bolo bun in Singapore because it’s $1.40 for a legit bolo cap and soft fluffy baked bread.
Then I’ve recently also discovered that the HK cocktail bun is quite a hearty joy for anyone looking for soft cookie like filling of coconut shreds milk powder and butter within the bakery’s faultless soft bun. The paper sponge cupcakes are eggy and cotton like for both children and adults who needs a snack. You have no idea how glad I was to find So Good at the revamped i12 (in the neighbourhood that’s the family’s weekend haunt).
A run at this bakery is almost becoming a weekly ritual for these good reasons.
I find a lot of joy when I bring loved ones to a favourite place and they love it them same.
Today I introduce mum to my current favourite sourdough pizza with stracciatella cheese. She was sold at first bite.
She also requested for a vegetarian meal so we opted for the grilled veggies which has green leafy (aka more nutritious) kale and broccolini, a mushroom steak and this ingenious bbq beetroot sauce. Also a sharing platter of avocado cream, pumpkin hummus, seeds praline served with pita bread and the marinated olives. We cannot bear to waste any bread here and the olives are divine. I tell her she needs to try the sourdough karaage next time.
I was glad the dinner had mum nodding in unanimous approval and she says she will bring the men, relishing in their EPL match and instant noodles at home, here soon.
