I find a lot of joy when I bring loved ones to a favourite place and they love it them same.
Today I introduce mum to my current favourite sourdough pizza with stracciatella cheese. She was sold at first bite.
She also requested for a vegetarian meal so we opted for the grilled veggies which has green leafy (aka more nutritious) kale and broccolini, a mushroom steak and this ingenious bbq beetroot sauce. Also a sharing platter of avocado cream, pumpkin hummus, seeds praline served with pita bread and the marinated olives. We cannot bear to waste any bread here and the olives are divine. I tell her she needs to try the sourdough karaage next time.
I was glad the dinner had mum nodding in unanimous approval and she says she will bring the men, relishing in their EPL match and instant noodles at home, here soon.
“I have a fetish for pretty cakes”, I said when discussing with my fellow colleague about which cake to get for our colleague’s birthday. This explains why I was drawn to luna’s orh nee cake after scrolling through the web, I subconsciously found myself spending hours to get the right one at an affordable delivery price ($7 flat fee for Luna). I definitely also checked the pretty cake box because I was elated when I opened the box, that dual-coloured whipping cream masterpiece was a joy to the eyes.
Taste wise, I was expecting a lighter sponge to the thickened yam paste but it was relatively dense; nothing direly wrong though.
Also, the fresh whipped cream and “heavier” yam paste I thought could do with another alternating element within to make this a stellar cake; right now it is a good cake.
Another installation of Tsujiri at whitesands because mum and I love the soft serve.
Today we decided on the chiffon cake parfait but still had to have our warumochi. The cake was decent and the parfait came with cornflakes and a scope of (sweet) red bean. As a whole we preferred the puffed rice crisps, cream and soft serve combination of the warumochi parfait - but as they say “you never try, you never know”.
Braved a 15 minute walk in the recent Singapore heat, from a church we were visiting only because of Burpplebeyond.
Also because I spied Denzy at i12 huggs outlet and thought this homegrown ice cream brand must be doing things right.
Our scoops of pistachio and yoghurt with speculoos (think firmer yole with ur favourite cookie sauce) were indeed promising and the waffles here are airy. They have crisp ends and are easy for 1 pax to finish off, well at least both mum and I had 1 each.
Was mildly peeved after spending 1 hour at the Bedok cafe when I enquired if they had wifi and the staff immediately chirped no; yet I later saw a “free wifi” sticker on the glass door while walking back to my seat. I should have asked “can I have the wifi password?”.
Realised I’ve not had Cedele cakes in awhile when I was taken aback by the $9.30 price tag of a slice of carrot walnut cake. “Inflation is real” I thought.
But lucky me I get to snag the 25% National Day discount on cakes to commemorate Cedele’s 25th anniversary.
Of course it is only befitting to get the National Day special - Gula Melaka Sago cake and I can always trust Cedele’s cakes inflation or not. The fleshy young coconut meat within the coconut whipped cream center is amazing, not forgetting the soft Gula Melaka cake promised to be baked with unrefined Gula Melaka and olive oil. Thank you Cedele for delivering always 🥹
Quoting my brother’s words “Peking duck and Ee Fu noodles with duck are core memories”, to explain we had these every (school) “holidays” when my late aunt would indulge us with meals at the former mandarin orchard (MO) pine court and in more recent years, imperial treasure at paragon.
So naturally reading that executive chef Fung at Kai Garden was formerly from MO, I knew I had to come here with the maternal family. When our duck was served, I was skeptical about the variety of coloured wraps, and 5 different sauces. However that great familiar taste of crispy duck skin wrapped with fresh spring onions and cucumber was in every bite.
The lean duck meat in the braised Ee Fu noodles was completely welcomed by the palate and rekindled so many positive memories for the mind. I also thought “this taste like home” and “I miss 姨姨”.
Other than the Peking Duck and noodles, what impressed me was the impeccable standard of all the other dishes we ordered - double boiled soups, pan-seared wagyu beef cubes, 小白菜 with gingko and beancurd skin. These were chinese dishes that made me proud to be chinese.
Again another after-thought - Kai Garden should be on the list of places chinese young adults bring their elderly folks with demanding palates to.
Laughed away when my mum and godma were perplexed by the saltiness and peculiarity of the spice and flavors that yardbird’s signature wings were seasoned with. I concluded - must be the SEA Chinese tastebuds used to home cooked food.
Overall, Yardbird has a reasonable lunch break set for $36++ which includes a sandwich/salad, a side and drink. Out of all we order I enjoyed the buttermilk biscuits which were dense and lovely with the side of jam.
While the burger and fish sandwich were generously portions, the former fared better as the fish was overdone. We’d also recommend sharing amongst females, 4 of us effectively shared 3 sets and were filled.

Ice cold green apple and orange sorbets, rum and raisin after a swelling day at the beach! Enabled by the one and only burpplebeyond ❤️
The long weekend is a perfect excuse to “live to eat”, or maybe get that coffee that was covered all over (social) media. I got a flat white that was milder than I’d imagine, maybe I should get the speciality drinks next time.
Had some time for a tea time treat here, give me 1 for 1 pastries anytime! Also thank you Burpplebeyond!
You can trust PPP to serve you real coffee, I had a cuppa daily brew that was well bodied and low on acidity - went well alongside the decent Kouign Aman and pain au chocolat.
The long weekends are a perfect excuse to “live to eat”, at 4pm after lunch and a leisure cycle mum and I found ourselves at St Marc’s that bodes nostalgia. You see I used to frequent the cafe weekly when St Marc’s had an outlet at Raffles City, during my university days.
Today the cold signature vanilla soft serve on a warm Danish pastry drizzled with salted caramel still hits the spot like it did years ago. Some things don’t change and I’m glad this little Mt Fuji is one :)
