With quite some liberty to “live to eat” on the weekends recently - it feels like we are on a “streak” to clock different les amis food group concepts #1
First a dinner date with mum at KOAL that I’ve bookmarked for awhile and the food does not disappoint. The signature slightly sweet white bread rolls were great to start with and vaguely reminds me of our soft Asian bread while being fancy with chive butter, sour cream (incorporated) and bacon bits.
I love trying different renditions of broccoli small plates and this one at KOAL hits the spot with Japanese flavors of sesame dressing, bonito flakes and a tangy savoury soy pickled onions to complement the richer flavors.
New deli-grocer in the East with dine in space was attractive enough to draw us in on a Saturday evening.
Our generously portioned fish and chips, fish burger featured similar beer battered haddock fish fillets that we found had a slightly overdone white meat while the batter was crisp on the outside but too thick and slightly undercooked inside. That said we did finish most of the meal snd the fries were fresh.
What I liked more were the seared salmon mentaiko and umami butter clams with toasted pita, reasons why I’d return to try other non-fried seafood produce to truly vouch for the quality of the produce here; after all aren’t they a deli-grocer.

When a scone crumbles easily upon being forked, you’d be skeptical about it; truly the one here was a tad dry.
But the viet drip coffee and sourdough Banh Mi on Burpplebeyond would keep me coming back.
A croffles date for a pre-occasion makes the Queen at home grin from ear to ear. While the set was nothing fancy it made for a simple happy tea time treat in the hood.
Back at this beautiful place to snag some 1 for 1 non-chilled tea time cakes on a lazy Sunday afternoon. While the promising lemon pound cake looked the part it was slightly dry on that coincidentally sweltering afternoon. The carrot cake fared better and will delight any walnut fans for the slice of cake had a generous portion of the brain food within and as garnish.

I wondered if the practice of treating to yourself to nice meals every other Friday was a consequence of having a corporate job… but regardless I was happy to find myself sipping on a smooth kaffir pisco sour and digging into a variety of seafood dishes at Marcy’s.
Expect an almost theatrical setting and patterned crockery that oddly reminded me of Alice in the wonderland for some reason.
For the food itself, i’d coined all we tried as dishes with well meaning flavors mainly from the different sauces, be it the umami butter of the crab toast, Coconut Leche Tigre in the Hokkaido scallop; and even the savoury thick bisque like sauce of the rigatoni. Marcy’s also does not skim on giving you more than enough seafood though expectantly for the prices you pay. Overall, the place is worth visiting for its ambience, then reliable food and drinks.
