Most Chee Chong Fun these days are all machine produced and this stall at the basement of the food centre still sells those traditionally rolled ones. The Chee Chong funs were tender and warm, most importantly it had a "fresh" taste to it. 2 for $1.60 despite the sign saying $1.50 what can I complain really. The chili was old school and together with the sweet sauce, sesame sauce, sesame, fried shallots and spring onions, it was a mashup of spiciness and sweetness. Will definitely eat it again when craving arises!
($12.90) a worthy pasta for this price. 5 slices of smoked duck which were well cooked and it was ever so tender! Particularly liked the distinct tastes felt from the duck skin and the meat itself! The pasta sauce was delightfully gentle and did not have a strong cream taste to it. Staff were particularly friendly and this is a really chill place listen to the indie music as one works. Definitely coming back on my "free" day next semester!
At stall number #02-44 was this stall that sells both fishball ball noodles and Yong tau foo. It's peculiar mixture of the Yong tau foo soup and the fishball soup was what that made the food special. The ingredients were fresh and chili& sweet sauce were also particularly good. Another chinese "fusion" food found in the hawker heaven, Tiong Bahru market. Shall try out their dry version next time!
Not a fan of grilled chicken but this totally blew my mind. The essence of this dish was the oil of the chicken that was apparent after the chicken was unwrapped from the paper. The special chili sauce that came with the chicken was da bomb! Tender chicken thigh along with its ever juicy skin, dipped in that chili sauce, made me lose control and went on a rampage. Yep, this is how good this chicken is!
Indulgence Friday. Although the price of $6.80 for this bowl of noodles might put you away a little. All that was needed was one spoonful of the Bak chor to make it all worthwhile. The abalone was fresh, tender and easy to chew off, along with the scallops, they were a luxury to have for eating Bak Chor mee. An interesting twist to it was also the Japanese style egg which I personally felt that was up to those ramen places or even slightly better! The Bak Chor was mushy and the fatty meat was just too shiok! A small slice of carrot was also given and gosh it was sweet and soft, full of delight. The only disappointment was the fried fishball which felt a little oily and too salty. Last but not least, the mee Pok. Noodles were thick and makes one feels it worth, chili was superb, not too spicy, and it was a really good mix! Must eat for Bak Chor Mee lovers!
Despite the unappealing looks of this dish. I found it extremely pleasing to it. Especially after a fellow tastemaker taught me the way of how his family eats this desert, helped me to get a more balanced taste of the desert. It was to stir and stir until the yam paste was completely well mixed with the milk and proceed with savaging the dish! 😋
When asked which was the better crab among this and the gan Xiang one, I had to think really hard to make a decision. This salted egg crabs' sauce were so creamy and delicious that I licked all my fingers clean after finishing up the crabs! The sauce was addictive and of sufficient quantity. Will come back if I ever have a salted egg craving!
For those who are in search of a really spicy kind of chili crabs, you are certainly up for a treat. Just from looking at those crabs already triggered some of my predator senses and I could feel myself starting to salivate. Indeed the chili had a lot of kick and the crabs were incredibly sweet and tender! It is rare nowadays to find crabs that are of quality and I am really happy to get to know of this place!
The clams were really fresh for this dish and the broth was superb! Each sip has a rich seafood taste and one could feel the different layers of tasting even when repeatedly eaten! This version felt very traditional and reminds me of the food that my grandma cooks! ($14/$21/$28)
Prawns doused in Chinese wine along with other traditional herbs, had a very "clean" soothing taste to it. Did not wow me but nevertheless still pretty decent. Secretly wished that the prawns were bigger though!
It felt like eating salted egg chicken nugget except that you could really taste the fresh chicken meat underneath that crispy golden skin! The salted egg taste was well balanced and it did not overwhelm me unlike some others that I had previously ate. Children who loves to nuggets would definitely love this! ($14/$21/$28)
First dish of the meal set and I went totally out of control for this one. Those boneless ribs that were coasted with this not so sweet but savory champagne sauce was just too yummy for a hungry me. Dipped in Diamond kitchen's homemade belachan had further increased the kick for this dish. The mixture of the sweet juices and spicy chili for every bite just kept me wanting them more and more! Priced at $14/$21/$28, these pork ribs are of real quality that one wouldn't mind spending for!
