Cafes (Brunch Edition)
Taking over 7 Sensations is this new cafe that only opened today that sells a range of items from mains to pastas to sides to even cakes! The Grilled Fish ($17) that comes drizzled with tangy herbed lemon butter sauce is tender and soft but these grilled dory fillets wasn't outstanding as the flavour of the sauce could not be fully tasted. The shoestring fries that came with is fine; it was crispy and slightly spiced, as with the mixed greens which came in fine as well.
Mon Bijou also serve All-day Breakfasts, such as this Truffle Scrambled Eggs ($16) that comes served with bratwurst, roasted tomato, homemade hash brown and a B&W toast (which is covered with squid ink for the black portion).
Was craving for a cream-based pasta and decided to settle down with this Spaghetti Carbonara ($16) which didn't disappoint! The bacon is crispy and the yolk is runny within the cooked egg white! The creaminess of the pasta is hinted with a pinch of white wine and further enhanced with Parmesan Cheese that mixed real well with the al-dente spaghetti!
The new tenant also does French-themed pastries such as crepes & galettes! The Yuzu Butter Crepe ($10) is a crepe layered with sugar and topped with yuzu-infused Bordier butter! The crepe was sweet, creamy & rich tasting with a tinge of Yuzu flavour!
Mains here are possibly the cheapest you can find, ranging from $3.80 to $9.80 per main, that includes pizzas and pastas. This Salted Pancakes ($5) comes with 3 pieces of pancakes, scrambled eggs, 2 pieces of bacons and also comes with salted egg sauce! The pancakes, scrambled eggs and bacon are average tasting, with the salted egg sauce being more watery than being a sauce.
The Baked Egg with Bacon ($10.90+) came with a toast that you can choose from either white, wholemeal and sourdough, sautéed mushrooms, 2 muffin shaped baked eggs and salad. The baked egg is rather normal tasting, with the sautéed mushroom being less flavourful and the bread doesn't taste as though it was toasted. The salad tasted rather alright though.
The Baked Egg Frittata ($10.90+) comes with a toast that you can choose from either white, wholemeal and sourdough, sautéed mushrooms, 2 muffin shaped frittata and salad. The frittata tasted rather similar to a Chinese egg omelette, though there was also ham inside to distinguish it from the dish. The sautéed mushroom being less flavourful and the bread (which I chose for the sourdough bun) tasted slightly sourish and didn't taste as though it was toasted. The salad tasted alright.
One of the newest brunch item to be introduced in Old Hen is this Crab Coleslaw Toast ($8.50) that consist of crab meat mixed with coleslaw sandwiched onto 2 slices of toasted bread and served with salad.
Envy Coffee also serves spaghetti, lasagne and sandwiches. This Beef Lasagne ($10.90) come with fine layers of pasta and cheese and immersed in tomato sauce which made the lasagne flavorful and excellent but unfortunately overpowered the taste of the beef. It is served alongside chips and salad.
Costing $10, the Chicken Tikka Naanwich is definitely a break from your usual wraps as the wraps are made using naan breads instead of pita breads. The chicken tikka is marinated nicely and is not too spicy. Nachos are also served beside it with salsa.
