Really delicious and worth the money
Other than lor mai kai, Singapore Bao serves siew mai which are juicy and plump.
The ground pork in their siew mai have a nice bite and texture instead of being mushy as with most siew mais. Like most people, I like having my siew mais dunked in the "hot" sauce for a little spicy kick!
Apparently, Singapore Bao used to all sorts of dim sum dishes but slimmed down their menu to serve only their two bestsellers - lor mai kai and siew mai.
Singapore Bao's lor mai kai is probably one which will polarise opinions. I guess it is best described as "clean and healthy tasting". Unlike other stalls, their lor mai kai comes topped with a generous portion of juicy and lightly marinated sweet savoury pieces of chicken, and chunks of stewed mushroom. I like that their glutinous rice is tender firm with distinctive grains yet slightly sticky. More importantly, it wasnt overly greasy with chicken fat.
I guess some people will prefer a softer and more greasy version of lor mai kai (like my dad) but Singapore Bao's version does kinda work for me!
Very very long queue, must come here at 7am, if not, surely late for work. Usually sold out around 9am.
Recently saw an 8days article that they sold their recipe to a fair price supplier, and this popular siew mai and lo mai kai is now also available at fair price kiosk at upper boon keng Road.
For a shop called Singapore bao, there is actually no bao sold here. They used to sell bao long ago, but their siew mai and lmk became too popular until now they only sell siew mai and LMK.
The siew mai is quite big. 1 for 70cents. 3 for $2. Meaty and quite easily to chew also.
The LMK was quite average, the rice a little dryer then the common LMK, but I quite like the taste of the chicken and especially the mushroom. LMK going at $2 each.
Store auntie is very nice despite her popularity. When I was there, she was a 1 person show by herself.
