Looks better than it tastes. Coconut milk isn’t the freshest, gula melaka seems to be lacking in fragrance. Can get it if you’re in a serious SOS cooling dessert craving mood.

Only wish that the portion was slightly more for $6.

Learned that Lao Hero (the father) was the man behind the wok man, frying the omelette with a lot of flair. He has since passed on, leaving behind a legacy of this legendary or luak; It is heartwarming to see that today, Ah Peng, the older son is continuing his family legacy to make the famous omelette with the distinctive aroma again.

The Miso Salmon ($26) was juicy and tender, with the portions sliding off the cut easily. Strips of zucchini bathed in light mayonnaise gave a good balance to the dish, and the cranberries added a unique tanginess, complemented with roasty almond nuts.
.
The Crab Roll ($24) came in a lovely serving of crab meat. Lightly coated with tartar and orange marmalade for some sweet citrus flavours and garnished with alfalfa and tobiko, the sweet meat is snuggled in a pillow of soft brioche that is crispy on the surface, and warm on the inside.
.
And finally, what better way to end the day than with a warm, moist chocolate chip cookie topped with vanilla ice cream? With a soft-baked dough and crumbly on the outside, this sweet and warm Monster Cookie ($15) spells sinful heaven, laden with delightful calories.
.
Every meal tastes better with drinks, and Rookery has a great selection to choose from. The Brooklyn IPA was malty with rounded hops, smooth and easy on the palate. And of course, we had to pick the good ol' Brewlander Love, a wild IPA with bright pine flavours and strong hoppiness.
.
Love Rookery for the nice atmospheric communal space. The sleek industrial theme and small hanging lights are features that make a good gathering spot for great drinks and casual meal. Thanks Rachel and Paul for the great service! 😉

If you love dark 🍫, this place is every chocoholics dream, moreso for their really dark choc (at least > 70%). Over the years, we have majorly outgrown those really sweet and milky chocs into very bitter people 😅 Their signature 80% Dark Choc was rich, smooth and bittersweet, with a clean finish. Each mouthful was dense and luxurious, we will defo be back for their other choc desserts! Love that the boutique looks posh and cosy at the same time, complete with wood furnishings and gold highlights. We'll be back!

Today I tried lunch at this cai fan stall and it did not disappoint. Varied choices and bill only came up to $2.50. I ordered a veg, tofu, and chicken. Dish was tasty and delightful, portions were not measly either 😊

Ordered a dry 肉骨大虾 kway teow ($5) with a mix of prawns and pork ribs. The pork ribs are extremely tender and the meat comes off the bone easily, together with a slight amount of soft rendered fats, ensuring the meat isn’t dry and hard but retaining a good texture and moisture. Prawns are halved before cooking and easily peels from the shells. The soup is rich and full of prawn flavours and the kway teow tossed in charred onions, dried chili and pork oil makes for a really satisfying meal.
.
Waiting time is about 10-15 minutes at lunch hour, but it’s well worth the wait and a definite stop-by for your prawn noodle cravings!

Our go-to chillout bar - TAP offers some fantastic craft beers on tap that are going for just $10 daily.
.
Just a decade ago, the beer options here were limited to Carlsberg, Tiger, Heineken.. Today, the craft beer scene is booming, and TAP Craft Beer Bar offers an eclectic selection of beers across the globe, and these pints of Dead Guy’s Ale and Maisel's Hefeweizen are just some of the great options on tap.
.
Dead Guy’s Ale is a toffee, hoppy, honey ale that’s best for a strong end to a long day at work. A clear amber, the liquid is mildly sweet and malty with small hints of orange peel.
.
The latter is a refreshing amber with a classic aroma and flavours including fruity banana notes, orange zest, slight nuances of nutmeg and clove. It's light, crisp, with a liveliness and refreshing tartness.
.
TAP is a low-key chillout spot to unwind after a day's work. They have just opened an outlet along the waters at Robertson Quay. Love the relaxed atmosphere here. Spacious on the inside with a small patio overlooking the river outside. There’s even a great bottle selection from Thirsty! An ideal location to grab a couple of friends for some pints and laugh over some quality talks 😉

Really satisfied that we popped by the place for a salad lunch. Without expecting much, we build our bowl by picking the base, toppings and dressing. For $7.90, pick 3 toppings; for 10.90, you can pick 5 toppings. Love the toppings, our fav protein was Smoked Salmon, which added saltiness, and the bouncy Butter Miso Prawns, which gave a creamy contrast to the salad. They were really tasty and savoury when paired with the mesclun salad base of baby spinach and lettuce, while the rocket gives a refreshing break from the crunchiness. Some of the other toppings include an onsen egg, a quarter avocado, and the list continues. Pesto dressing was a pleasant welcome too, and complimented the combi so well. Haven't had such a tasty salad in so long, and the salad here keeps me yearning for more.

Pick a couple items at the side, they charge by weight, but do not charge for 锅底费! For a good mix, pick some veggies, soy products, and chicken/pork because these meats go well with the cooking style. Love adding beancurd because of how well they soak up the sauce. There are a few noodle options bundled up at the ledge too, the large flat glass noodles are a great chewy texture when cooked so it’s highly recommended as well! Everything tastes better when you eat with rice! Typically go with medium level spice, which to us is just right. The mala base is fragrant, spicy and savoury without being too tongue-numbing, allowing the flavours of the ingredients to shine through. This place will definitely satiate any cravings you have for mala-based dishes.

Waffles ($9 with a scoop of ice cream) here are always light and fluffy, soaking up the ice cream while remaining crisp on the edges. We went with Pistachio, of course, and Orange Cranberry Smirnoff.
.
The Pistachio, is hands down the best we've found around the island. Made with 100% pure pistachio nut paste, it is fragrant, nutty rich flavour with bite-able roasted pistachio nuts for the extra crunch.
.
Citrusy with a light zest, the Orange Cranberry Smirnoff is a refreshing twist with a calming sensation in every bite. The Smirnoff is not as pronounced with small hints in the ending notes, but a good balance of vodka and fresh citrus is always welcome on a hot day!
.
Heard that they've recently opened another branch at Tiong Bahru. More places for an ice cream fix!

Penang Delights has been around for at least 10 years, always been the go-to place for a good prawn mee fix. When we visited today, we were greeted by a younger lady, probably the daughter of the original stall owner. A grumpy old man, he used to dish out bowls of prawn noodles with a flavour so rich that would keep us yearning for the same taste every month.
.
This bowl of dry prawn mee takes the cut with it’s spicy blend of chili and fried shallots. The noodles are topped with pork and prawns, and splashed with a ladle of rich prawn soup. The accompanying broth has a rich sweetness, the result of boiling prawn heads and pork bones for long hours. It’s less rich when we tried it today compared to the old days, but still retains its sweetness.
.
Though not the best we’ve tasted, it’s a definite visit if you’re in the area!

We ordered two bowls, the black and white (swipe ➡️), they also have the extreme chili and pesto version but we weren’t feeling too adventurous.
.
Black King is an interesting take on the usual roasted garlic version. Soup is just as rich as the white version but a tad too powdery, probably from the garlic paste added to the broth. The rich soup is tasty but the squid flavour was slightly strong, overshadowing the pork bone flavours.
.
Butao King (white) - this soup is rich and not overly cloying, but slightly on the saltier end and seems a little flat in terms of layers of flavors. On the order chit, you have to indicate your preferred spice level, we’d recommend just a 1 as the spicy sauce adds a kick but too much covers the taste of the rich pork bone soup.
.
Pork shoulder was lean and tasted slightly porky, but their pork belly was exceptional. Probably stewed for hours, the fats were rendered down and had a good texture and sinful caramelised pleasure in every bite.
.
Overall, a decent place for a less pricey ramen fix, but with strong flavours meant for the heavier palettes. Working in Suntec? Skipped lunch? Worth your dinner bucks if you’re craving some ramen and don’t want to travel too far! Note that they are closed 3-5pm if you're heading down!
