Its thickness and cottony texture can warm your heart and tummy in every way possible!
.
Sin Heng Kee specialises in congee that's extremely thick and gooey, achieved through hours and hours of boiling. Located within the housing estate, the Hougang branch was quickly filling up with dinner crowd by 5pm. Within just a few minutes of ordering, our piping hot bowls were served. They have over 20 combinations available; we ordered the Fish with egg porridge and Triple Egg. The consistency and texture was just so impressive!
.
The porridge was very well-seasoned and oh-so-smooth, and every mouthful brings a fragrance that lingers on after your meal. Others may find this bland, but we prefer this sweet and light flavour, coupled with fragrant ginger without being overly salty. Definitely worth the walk and wait too, Hougang is such a serene hood to be in!

A friendly neighbour of SAM @ 8Q, Standing Sushi Bar still retains its charm sans the crowds of yesteryear.

50% off all Dons on Sundays! This one is a steal if you canât make it on Mondays and Thursdays for their $3 sashimi!

Their Ikura Mentai Donburi ($17) was absolutely amazing! Fresh salmon lays atop well seasoned rice, charred for a smoky flavour. But hereâs the catch, take a bite of the charred salmon atop a spoonful of rice, and the salmon belly just melts down into the smooth oils mixing really well into the fluffy rice grains - the flavours in that mouthful are amazing!
.
The eel and salmon mango maki were good too. The eel had a touch of barbecued flavour, fresh and tasty. Mango was slightly sweet but hit the sweet spot with wasabi.
.
A pretty good hideout for a sushi/donburi fix, and definitely worth multiple visits.

Love how the salmon was perfectly cooked, not too overdone though I requested for it non-fried. It had the right amount of tenderness and texture, the layer of omelette atop the warm sushi rice was really fragrant and subtle sweet, complementing the simple dish so well.
.
My colleague thought the chicken katsu was done well too. Chicken was crispy on the outside and juicy inside. It wasn't greasy and didn't ooze oil with each bite.
Overall a great economical Japanese stall that's easy on the pocket.

Tucked away in Sunshine Plaza, Oven Marvel is a cozy bakery started by ex-Hilton Hotel pastry chef, Chef Johnny Ngiam. The puff pastry is buttery and flaky, and has a beautiful aroma. The pastry balance is just right, buttery but not too oily, yet not dry. You'll find chunks of chicken and unshrivelled peas in a peppery, creamy mashed potato filling, complementing the pastry in the most wonderful way. This is the kind of pie that reminisces bakeries in the hood back in the days. What a great savoury snack to have at any time!

Tucked away on the third floor of Fortune Centre, the name âJapanese Curry Expressâ may raise some eyebrows. But look beyond it, and you'd be surprised to find a gem in a little quiet building.
.
Fresh salmon slices cover a bowl of well seasoned sushi rice, topped with thick dollop of mentaiko torched to perfection, and sprinkled with furikake bits and chilli powder. A bite into the salmon slices smeared my lips with mentaiko sauce because they were so generous with it that it was like gooey thick cream mixing with the meat in my mouth. The resulting Salmon Mentai Don ($14 for large, though wish bowl was bigger) exudes smoky flavours, giving a slightly peaty fragrance. This gem definitely Don disappoint ;)

We had their stewed pork with river crab in tomato pho, springy pho doused in pretty fragrant broth and the crab was sweet and fresh! Their banh mi was, however, lacking compared to the authentic street side variants in Vietnam, and we can only wish it tasted better.
.
Pop by pho some good broth! đđ

Smooth, silky, yummy. Warm porridge on a rainy day just hits the spot! Simplicity in every spoonful, this porridge is a no-frills dinner on a rainy evening. Got the sliced fish century egg congee ($3), and the couple is pretty generous with the ingredients! Crack a raw egg for 50c, to add to the already silky texture of the porridge, and drizzle with sesame oil for a slight fragrance. đđ˛

The items here are pre-selected, unlike the typical YTF. A standard bowl consists of fishballs, fried crispy tofu, and fish cakes. Especially love the separate bowl of soup - it has a subtle and fresh sweetness and fragrance from fried shallots, with a generous serving of cabbage and shredded lettuce. This dish ($4.5) is the perfect comfort food for the cool weather. Always returning whenever we are near Harbourfront!

Unlike your typical deep-fried variants, the Black Pepper Chicken ($8) is grilled and on a hotplate, keeping it warm as it is served sizzling! Peppered with goodness from the black peppercorns, the chicken is tender and juicy, definitely not dry! This is served with a base of fresh onion, a slice of garlic bread, vegetable medley and potato with a little butter, covered in a blanket of black pepper sauce.
.
The sides are not especially unique but the quality of the tender protein more than makes up for it. Definitely our go-to place for simple western cravings minus the guilt that comes with deep fried food!
