Omakase for $18?! Newly-opened Ryo Sushi (@ryosushisg) is currently serving a promotional 10-course omakase. The shop is located along the row of restaurants at Orchid Hotel.

While I was initially skeptical of the quality of the sushi, I was pleasantly surprised because it was pretty good! The course starts off with edamame, followed by 7 pieces of sushi, a crab hand roll and miso soup. The portions seem quite little, but surprisingly filling. Nevertheless, should you require a little more to fill you up, you can feel free to order more pieces of sushi ala carte. Highlights of the omakase would include the salmon aburi with shoyu foam and tuna with yuzu zest. However, they only serve 18 portions of the promotional omakase a day.

They also have other omakase sets at $38, $68, and $98. Check out their website www.ryo.sg for more details on their menu!

One of the highlights from Cheek by Jowl were not their meatier mains but rather their barramundi.

The fish was fresh and flaky, with the skin perfectly crisped; no hint of fishiness at all. The bonito butter added a nice creaminess and richness to the dish, as well as a lot of flavour. The caramelised onions provided a nice sweetness which complimented the savouriness of the fish really well.

The grilled pork belly skewers from Three Little Pigs was so good! The meat was really well-marinated and very tasty, and incredibly tender and juicy. The scrambled eggs were fluffy and moist, cooked to the right consistency, and added a nice creaminess to the dish. However, don't spam too much of the sauce - it's meant to be dipped into and not poured over or else it'll be too salty (we learnt that the hard way).

Many thanks to Burpple for the invite, and Tiong Bahru Plaza and the various participating merchants for hosting us!

Perhaps my expectations had been raised after reading the good reviews, because, while nothing was bad, it was just ok and not anything mind-blowing.

The ingredients used were very fresh - the pineapples provided a nice burst of sweetness, while the acidity of the tomatoes really brightened the whole dish. I also liked how the peas, cucumber, and carrots gave it a nice crunchy texture. The fish, however, was kind of underwhelming - it didn't really have a lot of sesame flavour and (perhaps it was because it was tuna as opposed to salmon) it felt slightly tough and chewy/sinewy. Perhaps their salmon would have been a better option! Portion-wise, while it seemed tiny, it's actually quite ok if you're not looking to be super full.

Just note: it gets really crowded around lunchtime, so come early (1130am-ish) if you want seats immediately.

Nothing beats ice cream on a hot day (which is everyday in Singapore) and the Honey Goldilocks ($6.40) from 21 Cube Artisan hits the spot!

This one comes with a s'more wrapped sugar cone, organic wildflower honey, graham crumble and honey comb. Surprisingly, it's not cloyingly sweet despite the numerous toppings - this can be attributed to the appropriately-coined "mild-flavoured" vanilla soft serve ice cream itself being really light and refreshing. It wasn't overly rich, and helped to balance out the sweet toppings. What's more, the cone is huge and the portion given plus quality definitely makes it worth your dollar.

One of the highlights of our tasting would have to be Baba Wins' Peranakan Cusine. The babi sio was incredibly tender and tasty, with melt-in-your-mouth fats, while the meat and potato stew was super comforting and homely. Pairing them with a plate of steaming hot rice and their fragrant belachan makes for a simple yet satisfying meal.

This creme br没l茅e french toast looked so good, but fell so short of expectations. After reading good reviews about this, the end result was really quite disappointing. The toast was dry, bordering on stale, while the outside was slightly burnt.

Taste-wise, the brioche had none of the buttery goodness you would expect and the dish as a whole could be sweeter. The scoop of ice cream helped in adding a bit of wetness/sweetness to the dish, but ultimately it was too little relative to the amount of toast. Maybe it was a bad day, but I would give it a miss and not order this.

Finally got to try the much raved-about bara chirashi don ($12.80) from Sushiro! The sashimi was cut into thick chunks which made each bite more substantial. Their marinade is on the slightly sweeter side, which is fine although I personally prefer it to be more savoury. It looks small, but is actually quite filling! Definitely one of the more value-for-money sashimi bowls around.

You can top up $3 to get a salad and soup, or $5 to get the same plus three slices of salmon sashimi. I think it would be more worth it to spend on their aburi sushi, which looked really tempting when they were torching it in front of us. Thankfully, we went early so there was no queue - otherwise, be prepared for a long wait as there isn't much seating room!

Was looking for a place around my area for lunch and thanks to Burpple, I discovered a great beef noodle stall. Generous portions of beef and tendons were given, and the soup provided was so flavourful from being enriched with the beef. I personally prefer the dry version as the thick gravy coats the noodles really nicely. However, if you prefer the soup version, don't fret because their soup is equally tasty and super flavourful. I wish their chilli packed a bit more of a punch, as the herbal flavours of the beef and gravy seemed to overpower it. The fermented shrimp added a nice tanginess to it though.
