Love the homeliness of this east side Italian restaurant. Our server passionately taught us how to recreate the dehydrated egg in the veal tartare, and the food is tasty in its simplicity. Both the carbonara and this slipper lobster pasta ($26) were yum! #burpplexchope
I was really looking forward to dining here after reading so many stellar reviews. Alas, most of the recommended dishes like the cod fritters and Portuguese egg tarts didn't quite impress. What I really liked was the Grilled Tenderloin ($48 for 200g) slicked in garlicky Portuguese sauce, as well as the sparkling Sangria Espumante (it's off the current menu but ask them for it), punchy with all sorts of flavour additions including elderflower and star anise. #BurppleXChope
Big nod of approval from my house's bibik too. #peranakan #lunch #weekday #familyrun #burpple #peranakanfood #partyinmymouth
A homely joint with earnest, friendly service and some great dishes like $10 assorted sashimi (super fresh) and this Champon ($18) - thick ramen noodles, sliced pork and assorted vegetables in a thick, milky and nourishing broth. Love supporting such small businesses.
I'm not a big fan of buffets, but I like this one ($42++ for lunch) for its live stations - hand sliced sashimi, delicate crepes and cooked to order pasta. The selection of mains leaned a bit too heavily towards red meats like lamb, but I imagine meat lovers would enjoy that. Save your calories from the soso sliced cakes for the chocolate fondue and these crepes 😍.
Seriously, my aunt is more in the know of hip food spots than I am these days. Thought we'd beat the lunch crowd but the place was already buzzing by 11:30am. I like how they're focused on making one dish great and in an updated modernish setting, but when we could finally hear ourselves think (tables are really close and the lady seated beside us was really loud), we couldn't help but wonder why there weren't any other ingredients like red beans and attap chee in the super lemak and yummy chendol?

Curiosity had me venturing to Old Airport Road Food Centre (my first visit in the year since we moved to our current apartment only two bus stops away 😂) in search of it. I finally found the auntie, who was smiley and not at all fazed when I asked to buy five loaves - people from Australia buy it in bulk to freeze, she tells me. As for the bread, it's like the girls described - pillowy, soft and with a distinct milk fragrance. I probably would like it more if it reminded me of my childhood, and if I wasn't gluten intolerant. Haha. Find this at Mei Jia stall, unit 01-43. #burpple #burpplesg #oldschool #bakery #milkbread #childhood #childhoodfood #bread #notglutenfree #singaporefood #foodhunt
This ludicrously pink restaurant, coupled with cheesy Bollywood show tunes on loop, doesn't make much of a first impression. I was thus so surprised by how tasty their pav bhaji ($8), a popular snack of buttered toast and curried vegetable stew, is! Where many joints I've tried less me more than a little unsatisfied, these guys have got the punchy flavours right. Worth a visit if you're in the Katong area, or a pav bhaji fanatic like me.
A meal that throws me back to eating in a hole in the wall banana leaf joint in a Mumbai suburb with my friend Raghu. This place is buzzy and filled with hungry Indian families and the working class, the waiters are pretty efficient and the food is tasty. There's no price menu - waiters come around and you just point out what you want. Thankfully prices are very reasonable - this feast of free-flow rice and sambar, two meaty pieces of fish, chicken curry AND prawn curry set us back just under $30 for a party of three. 👍🏼
Appam ($4.80 for a set of two) that is crisp and brown along the edges and tender and fluffy in the centre, plus unfailingly great Madras coffee ($2.70).
Hearty parmigiano risotto with seasonal baby root vegetables at this slightly far out joint in Little India. Hearty and earthy, but everything just felt a tinge too stodgy on the palate.
The whole works, including double patties, too much bacon, cheddar and chilli. In short, a delicious monstrosity ($34) that easily feeds two, one of whom is a very hungry hubby.
