Every single component was dipped in batter then fried. Think the likes of tempura prawns, crabmeat sticks, tofu, mushrooms, sausage etc. The broth is a fiery red and boasting of a fiery finish. If you desire some of the elements to retain its crispyness, my advice is to put afew aside on a plate and leave the rest soaking up the goodness. For me, it was a nice pleasant heat with a hint of umaminess right at the tip of the tongue.

This is my nasi lemak @walaku.sg . A not so common component is the nasi (rice) wrapped in banana leaf and grilled. One would think it is the star. Perhaps my expectation was high. The rice is moist but the fragrant coconutty "oomph" was missing and I did not get that "lemaky" satisfaction. I do love the chicken. Skin was so crispy, to the point of being crackling. With crispy crunchy bits of lemongrass and galangal sprinkled over, it creates a frenzy burst on the palate. However, I prefer the sambal to be packed with more heat.

Joo Chiat is a quaint neighborhood with a laid back charm. Hopefully it remains unspoilt and a blast from the past. If you visit, best to put on your comfy shoes and be prepared to walk. Only way to suss out the hidden gems, something old and something new.

What don't I like about this? The mix of chilli sauce, light soy sauce and oil. The sodium overpowered what I liked. It was alittle oily for my tastebuds. The saltyness and oilyness became atad cloying after slurping about half a bowl.

Most customers I see seems to enjoy it. It is not all that bad or it is not all that good. So I suppose it could be the tolerance level of how much salt and oil one is able to take.

Yes yes yes!! After slightly more than a year of renovations, Marine Parade Central food centre re-opens. Much anticipated by those staying in this neighborhood. Familiar stalls with addition of some new ones.

And this "hum-ful" cockles charkwayteow with over two decades of business is also back at the same spot before the renovation. Not so "hum-ful" as cockles were small and quantity reduced. All I would say is "same same but abit different". However, the queue is still there.

An added feature is the tray return facility. Get fifty cents reimbursed upon return of tray. This food centre can say goodbye to heavy rain flooding as the perimeter surrounding it are all down slopes. I can see many happy faces.

Orlulu (blackened) is the way I liked it! Tender chicken meat and chinese sausage for that bit of salty kick in all that sweet black sauce covered rice grains. And don't forget beneath lies a layer of charred rice which bears a most crispy texture, similarly to a cracker. This bit is the ultimate #ricegasm and most sinful for many.

A popular claypot chicken rice stall from Lorong 33 Geylang which moved to Beach Road. Waiting time is 30minutes. If you do not want to wait, my advice is to call them in advance, order your claypot. You just need to tell them time of your arrival.
