Opted for a triple scoop during an earlier visit ($8) (+ $0.70 per premium flavour) - this has my personal favourites! I love the brandied cherries nestled amid rich chocolate in dark forest, and the fragrance of earl grey tie guan yin. The seasonal guava was really refreshing!
Opted for a triple scoop ($8) (+ $0.70 per premium flavour) of rum & raisin, pistachio and chrysanthemum. Each flavour is rich and creamy!
Their cakes are extremely lacklustre and I’d recommend to give them a miss, but the ice cream bar ($9.50) was delectable! Paired the 80% dark chocolate with a double shot of espresso - the ice cream is sticky and richly flavoured, well balanced by an acidic roast. Wasn’t a fan of the 88% dark chocolate sauce as I found it a tad tart, but the 64% dark chocolate ice cream went nicely with chocolate soil and shavings!
A simple bowl of spinach soup ($3.50) chock full of ingredients! Impressed with how clear the soup is despite the strong flavours.
Death by Brisket ($32+) is an interesting medley of flavours - the beef lies on one side with red wine reduction, whilst scallops lie on the other with a garlic butter gravy. The sauces are certainly heavy on salt and I would appreciate if the meat was a little more tender. But I love how the surf & turf concept was executed with such bold contrasting flavours, supported by quality ingredients! I must commend the impeccable service as well - the boss stopped to ask how we found the food, and the staff are extremely attentive.
Sideways is a small joint with a cosy, low-light ambience perfect for a midweek night out. The lamb & feta pizza ($28+) far exceeded my expectations! The dough is chewy and piquant, with a beautiful char along its edges from the wood fire. The lamb is infused with flavour after hours of slow cooking and balanced by the sharp feta. I hardly ever order lamb, but their rendition was extremely well done and I look forward to returning for their lamb cutlets!
Love the chewy hand pulled mee hoon kueh, but I think I’ll be sticking to the plain version next time! Found the dumplings ($4) a little carb heavy and lacking in flavour.
A really unassuming dish! The prawn & crab aglio ($18) is tossed in a simple medley of olive oil and chilli flakes. Wasn’t a fan of the dry pieces of crab that flakes apart, but it was otherwise enjoyable.
The linguine with prawns ($24++), on the other hand, is extremely unassuming but won me over. Tossed in a lemon chilli butter sauce and topped with shavings of parmesan, each strand is slick and flavourful. The dish was a lovely balance of tart spiciness with fresh succulent prawns to boot!
Hm Over Easy boasts of its burgers, but I don’t think the to-die for burger ($26++) lives up to its name. The potato buns were rather dense and lacked a crisp exterior whilst the wagyu patty was a tad dry and seemed like a regular store-bought slab. My favourite parts were probably the sautéed onions and mushrooms! Perhaps their other burgers will fare better.
Tried the famous good ol’ fashioned mac & cheese ($14++) but opted to add truffle and wild mushrooms ($4++). The truffle was subtle but I imagine the cream sauce would be quite jelat in its absence! The crumbs added texture to an otherwise one-dimensional dish. Portion is large enough to be a main!
Lino’s burrata pizza ($26++) was a winner from the very first bite! The crust is light, crispy on the outside and wonderfully chewy on the inside. It does get a little soggy if you let it sit too long, but this is easily one of the best pizza doughs I’ve had. The burrata is mild and creamy, accented with savoury pesto and sweet tomatoes. Would happily return for this!
