Their popiah, rojak, and lobak were fantastic too. For the popiah, it was crispy and also, while it had the soft skin, it was not brittle so it held itself well together, and goes well with the chilli on top.

The rojak and lor bak were amazing with the dipping sauces given as well in terms of crispiness and the juicy enough so as to not be hard to bite .
Ordered the Lor Mee which was quite nice as well though admittedly, adding vinegar is an acquired taste in my honest opinion.

Overall, the dishes were fantastic and would recommend people who would love to experience Malaysian Chinese food to come to this coffeeshop should they visit Kuala Lumpur.

What is also interesting is that this was the first place I saw #TakNakStraw… and that is what has been sparking my obsession with this over the trip, corrected to say ‘Tak Mau Straw’ by some and then ‘Tak Nak Straw’ again. But yes, this is where I first saw the sign, not sure if @mytaknak is behind this as well.

For a while, they also had an additional branch at Bugis Junction B1 which opened in 2015 but that was short-lived and closed by 2017.

After renovations in 2017, Yellow Submarines also incorporated desserts such as ice creams, cheese toasts, and cakes into their menu.

The submarine sandwiches (for which the name is based on), sadly shrunk over the years and not as fantastic. But the memories will live on, as a place I met with peers… Farewell for now, and see you again soon.

Hong Kong has a lot of herbal tea shops located near traditional medicine shops conveniently.

I stopped to have a small bowl of Wong Lo Kat tea, which is supposed to “alleviate heat and detoxifies body” and is wonderful to reduce cough, cold, or heaty symptoms according to @koongwohtongherbaljelly. I was recommended this as I did not want any tea with added sugar. This tea has a more bitter aftertaste, thus allowing the drinker the chance to sip and appreciate its qualities better by sitting for a while. 🍵

I also chose to sit in as I preferred to drink out of their bowl than to use the plastic bottle as I had time to spare.
Still torn between herbal teas, regular cup of teas, and tea fusions when served warm. Do they really have much differences in their effects on the body?

Amazingly warm, rich, and tasty!] I have to include the Kottu Paratha (looks like mee goreng or kway teow - the prata is cut finely with the meat and looks like noodles). It had some spicy tenderness and also the time used to fry this was just right as it was warm. I chose to have 1 egg appam and 1 plain appam. The amount of coconut milk in the appam was so heavenly that you needn’t dip it in any more milk. The egg appam to me was the winner as the yolk was not too hard and added some interesting blend to the milky appam flavour itself. The crispy sides also added to their wonderful mix of crispy and rich/creamy tastes. 😍😋 My dining companions tried the brown sugar milk appam (not photographed, which was very very sweet (even the normal milk appam can be considered sweet so imagine the sweetness of this). So, only if you have a very sweet tooth and willing to share, go for that!
And of course, what’s a meal without some nice tea and milk? ☺️ I love the red decor as well as the flamingo cushions, brownie points for that.

@mywondermama’s Nasi Ayam Berempa comes with the crispy fried chicken, sambal prawns (chilli sauce/paste prawns), homemade sambal merah dan hijau (green and red chilli paste), salted egg, laksa soup, and 3 pieces of pappadam.
For the price, the dish is indeed a very hearty dinner and it didn’t disappoint, though I felt the briyani rice was slightly dryer than what I expected. The fried chicken was juicy and loved the sambal sauce with the prawns and the one by itself too. The salted egg was a slightly miss for me but perhaps I am not used to salted egg served in that style, but the style closer to what you get with prawns and chickens (more gravy-style). Nonetheless, they have a wide range of dishes to choose from, and the Wondermama at 1 Utama are also a partner of the #taknakstraw campaign by @mytaknak. This is part of a positive change to reduce dependency on a single-use product that only a selected few need and not everybody. .

Firstly, they managed to heed my “no plastic straw” request. Featured in this photograph from @bamboostrawgirl #VarunBYO Also CC#TakNakStraw (@mytaknak perhaps? Hehe.
The food is served in the bamboo towards customers, though I felt it was more of a marketing gimmick.
The taste of the briyani rice was great, and the side dishes was slightly spicy.
The main qualm of the restaurant is the service crew’s delayed responses to food items and inattentiveness.
The biryani is great but a lot for improvement in other aspects (6.5/10)

Sometimes I go for café coffee over the coffee shop/hawker centre coffees due to the beans used. Honestly, the atmosphere inside @lanzarote.cafe is amazing, tucked in a corner of the High Street Centre.

#VarunBYO I also love how open many cafés are to reusable takeaway cups/bottles as substitutes for plastic/styrofoam/polyethylene-lined coffee cups.
Went on 17 September, and definitely would go again if I visit the area. .

I had the Captain’s Favourite Curry (bottom): Penang-inspired Kapitan curry chicken served with ginger, lemongrass, chillies, and limes and served with a bun at the side. The curry was great with the harmonious blends of spices but the bun didn’t complement it so well. Needed a fluffier bun to go along.
My lunch companion had the Oriental Mac and Cheese (top), served with chicken meat with cheesy macaroni and meslun salad and strawberries. This dish however missed the mark when it came to savouring that melted cheese.
Overall, the concept of the place; for Hello Kitty, goes against the pink connotation and I appreciated that. While decor has multiple features and engravings of her, the effort put into this restaurant is superb. Service and ambience was great. Though, I won’t sit in those chairs hanging from the top; hard to sit and eat together at the same time…😂 However, I personally feel the price tag is very hefty and dear for the meals, and I feel if the prices were halved or 25% reduced, there may have been more traffic. Also, the Hello Kitty fanfare has quietened in recent times.

@ollie_kitchen_n_bar at @thecentrepoint_sg, set up after the renovations of the shopping centre in Orchard, provides a great cosy spot to chill and have a drink and meal. While my meal took slightly longer than expected, it was worth the wait as the meat was so good and went well with the garlic that’s smothered on top. The other vegetables as well make for a great low-carb meal. 😋

Also had a long black, iced. They heeded my “no straw” request. I also I used the @bamboostrawgirl straw #VarunBYO. Nowadays, just using the reusable straw is seen as bad or not enough. But as we all know, it’s a start and we move slowly, step by step. You never make a baby walk when they’re ready, you never give a child a surgery examination. It’s all about small steps towards a better world, and I am glad that people are seeing that plastic straws are a choice if you are not having health conditions that detriment use of reusable straws. Otherwise if you don’t wish to use a straw at all, by all means drink from the cup as you would at home if possible.
BTW, brought some cute friends and they are here to celebrate this happy lunch. I think they are beavers, though some think they are squirrels. Anyway, for those keen on getting a hold of them, they are available at selected 7-Eleven stores and perhaps others like Fwah or other smaller handphone/box rental shops…bought by chance. .
