Unlike the conventional ones with gravy, Nonya Colors serves it stir fried like your usual economical bee hoon, but tastes exactly how you'd expect it to be, irresistibly tangy, sweet and sour from tamarind and sambal chilli. I'll always order this set with Rendang Chicken, it's tasty and great to last through the flight back home!

According to my Uncle, this is the famous Nasi Lemak of Klang Valley. Priced at RM6 and wrapped within a brown greaseproof paper on a piece of banana leaf, the portion of fluffy rice is always more than enough, and the sambal is seriously solid, sweet and quite spicy, but oh-so-savoury as well. I love the combination with sambal sotong, it hits the spot and creates such an amalgamation of flavours which can't be found anywhere else. They are open 7am to noon so be sure to go early before they are sold out!

Easties are no stranger to the little eatery - Song Kee Fishball Noodles.
.
We had the $6 option (were told they donât serve $4 anymore) and it was sinful delightful. The thick springy kway teow soaks up the sauces well. Noodles are tossed with hae bee giving a sweet flavour and the chili provides a slight heat in the background, without being too overpowering. The fresh fishballs are really chewy, and the soup is clear and refreshing with lettuce.
.
What stood out was the âherh keowâ or fish wanton - made with Malaysian yellowtail fish, the grippy texture of the skin with tapioca flour surrounding the succulent minced meat mixed with shallots and fried garlic made for a tasty morsel.
.
Awesome dinner and totally worth a visit again!

First started out as an online grocer for fresh sashimi-grade fish, Soshinsen is both a restaurant and wholesaler of fresh air flown fish from Japan.
.
The sashimi was fresh, both Salmon ($5.80) and Salmon Belly ($7.80), not too fishy, and came with generous thick slices. Chawanmushi ($4) was of a reasonable standard and the Salmon Oyaku Don ($16.80) was pretty decent. We also tried the Gyudon ($14.80) which was served with generous portion of beef. For maximum enjoyment be sure to mix the onsen egg consistently around the entire bowl.
.
The Salmon Mentai Nigiri ($2) was good too! Thick slices of salmon and torched salmon tartar lies atop fluffy sushi rice. What impressed us was the Aburi Salmon Maki ($10.80) - blowtorched to perfection with a strong smoky flavour! The mayo and salmon exuded such peaty aroma that each mouthful felt fresh off the grill. The avocado mixed well with the soft half-grilled salmon and warm rice, made for a party in the mouth.
.
Lastly, the Yuzu Cider ($5.90) was a pleasant alcohol-free refresher rich in yuzu aroma with a mild sweetness, while delivering a fresh and clear aftertaste.
.
Definitely worth a visit if youâre at Hougang Mall, because The Midtown is just a short walk away!

Ranking in our list of top fish soup and nestled in Maxwell Food Centre, Jin Hua serves up generous portion of Cantonese sliced fish soup and definitely embodies what it means to be value for money. We've always been a fan of sliced fish rather than fried (why fry the freshness out of a silky smooth fish, plus the oily finish means it's no longer healthy?!) The milky broth is indulgent and creamy and never fails to disappoint. The soup is especially fragrant with the addition of sesame oil. And of course have to give credit to the scrumptious thick rice noodles that carries a smooth slippery texture and absorbs the richness of the brothâs essence. Love the xiao bai cai that provides dietary fiber too!

All the walls had posters of the snacks and bubble tea flavours sold - probably at least 100 items, from milk shakes to bubble tea to milo dinosaur. The photos on the wall look so old-school and almost peculiar. They even sell burgers, pancakes, waffles, cheese chicken, fries and the list goes on..! In addition, they had the titbits, sweets and soft drinks commonly found at your mama store. Manned by a couple since 2009, students from the nearby primary school patronise after class, and the queue can get pretty long during peak hours. Truly applaud this shop for coping with the competition today.
.
I had the standard milk tea, it came with free pearls and they turn out to be really fresh and QQ, unlike the artificial commercialised ones these days. The drink came up to $2 (who would have thought at this day and age?) I'm incredibly blown away by the variety of choices this shop offers; totally charmed ordering from them, almost felt like I have time travelled back to the 90s.
.
Really proud of small ventures like this, especially if the food is good and palatable. I hope that we will be able to support to keep them around for time to come amidst the competition. :â)

So youâre craving Mexican but tired of generic tacos? Fret not, because tucked away in an old colonial facade along Beach Road is a little hideout offering a tangy and spicy Korean twist to the Mexican staple.
.
We had the Chilli Lime Prawn ($17) and Braised Carnitas ($14) tacos, both topped with tomatoes and onion, drizzled with light mayo. Their Kimchi Carnitas Fries ($16) - fries topped with shredded pork, kimchi and a little melted cheese was pretty memorable, with the spice and zest from the kimchi balancing out the gelak-ness of the fries. Pork shreds were tender with the meat fibres falling off easily. .
Great for a Mexican fix if youâre in the area, muchas gracias! ;)

Finally popped by this place @siew_ling has been telling us for the longest time. To my amazement, this is a hidden gem within the Hougang estate, it's located in between the road connecting Hougang and Tampines. Before reaching the stall, you will notice a snaking queue formed outside the stall. Construction workers will dabao many packs of food at one go. They basically sell economic rice, and their crisp and juicy har cheong gai proves to be the specialty. The dishes are really really tasty too. A plate of 2 wings, 2 veg, and eggs costs $3.50. Your meal can go as low as $2 if you order the basic ingredients. Truly simplicity at its best!!

During then the dish only costs about $4?? Always enjoyed the fish and grilled chicken dunked into flavourful black kecap manis based sauced. They'll put a slice of omelette and ask if you want light curry gravy added onto your rice. I think the standard may have dropped or we were just unlucky today. The fish was taken from a pile of pre-fried fillets that seemed hastily fried, the black sauce was quite oily too. Also realised that the sweet sauce was really sweet. Guess I must have aged over the years. đ Anyway, dinner is always awesome when I can dine in the comfort of AC and enjoy 10% off with Kopitiam card đ

The mushroom sauce is exactly why this bowl of BCM tastes so good. For $3.50, it's definitely value for money and really satisfying.
