A trio of mini bowls, Black Sesame Paste, Walnut Paste, and Almond Cream, makes this set a good option for sampling multiple desserts in smaller portions. The Black Sesame Paste was light and smooth, slightly watery, with a moderately nutty and earthy flavour. We were hoping for a richer, more intense profile. The Walnut Paste had a thicker consistency but still felt somewhat watered down; the nuttiness was present, though a subtle sour note threw the balance off. Neither was quite to our liking, but the Almond Cream redeemed the set. It was thick, creamy, and pleasantly sweet.
They say it’s not what you eat, but who you eat with. And while that’s true to a certain extent, for a foodie, flavour matters too. Here at Yat Ka Yan, it’s both where good company meets comforting dessert. It’s a cosy spot where everyone feels like one big family, and despite the long queue, it had a quick turnover rate.
Purple Rice Ice Cream ($5.50)
A rich and filling chilled dessert. The thick, creamy, and sticky black rice carries a natural sweetness, elevated by a drizzle of coconut milk that enhances its flavour profile. Topped with a scoop of vanilla ice cream, it adds extra chill and sweetness. While this dish is typically enjoyed hot, the cold version was surprisingly better. The rice starches thicken when chilled, creating a more pudding-like texture as the solidification brings out a richer, deeper mouthfeel that lingers pleasantly.
Chendol ($4)
A classic dessert featuring finely shaved ice topped with green pandan jelly and red beans, then generously drenched in creamy coconut milk and rich gula melaka. The green jelly was well-made, with a smooth and slightly chewy texture, while the red beans were sweet and sticky. The coconut milk was ladled on liberally, and the palm sugar added a deep, natural sweetness. There was also an unexpected savoury note that made the dessert even more appetising, possibly from salted caramel, which gave the overall flavour profile more depth and appeal.
Mini Soup Set of 3 ($6.80)
A trio of mini bowls, Black Sesame Paste, Walnut Paste, and Almond Cream, makes this set a good option for sampling multiple desserts in smaller portions. Honestly, it tasted like classic Campbell’s with a drizzle of truffle oil to fancy it up. What saved it was the garlic bread, toasty on the outside, fluffy inside, and generously slathered with a strong, aromatic garlic spread.
The portion was huge, hearty, and generous. The grilled chicken was thick-cut, tender and succulent, bursting with smoky flavour in every bite. The rich, umami mushroom gravy took it to the next level. The crispy fried fish was served piping hot that I nearly scalded myself with the first bite. Inside, it was soft, smooth, and melty; outside, a thin, crisp layer of breaded crumb gave it a tastisfying crunch. Paired with tartar sauce on the side, it was a fully tastisfying combo.
The set also came with two sides of your choice from the nine available options. I don’t know what happened that day, but my mouth just blurted out CARBS AND MORE CARBS, so here we are with Japanese Curry Rice and Mac & Cheese. The curry rice featured a bowl of fluffy, fragrant white rice plated alongside the mains, then drenched in thick, flavourful Japanese curry sauce. As for the mac and cheese, it was soft and chewy with a standard nacho cheese mix, slightly tangy and generously portioned. No regrets on the carb bomb.
Neighbourhood Western Grill in Yishun open till 2am !?
Bradley’s Grill is a newly opened, humble stall in a coffeeshop, serving Western food with restaurant-quality standards at affordable prices. They have been operating for the past two months and have quietly gained a following among nearby residents.
I was glad to finally visit after spotting their posts on social media. While they used to open during lunch hours, they have recently shifted to a later schedule, now starting at 3 pm. Closed every Wednesday, so plan ahead! For the latest updates, check out their socials at @bradleys_grill .
After scanning the menu, I couldn’t decide, everything looked too good. So I went with the best of both worlds, Grilled Chicken Chop & Crispy Fried Fish ($12.90). Also got myself a comforting bowl of Truffle Mushroom Soup ($3.90). Honestly, it tasted like classic Campbell’s with a drizzle of truffle oil to fancy it up. What saved it was the garlic bread, toasty on the outside, fluffy inside, and generously slathered with a strong, aromatic garlic spread.
Best part is, I get to put my CDC voucher to good use!

Steaming rice topped with braised pork belly, soft yet slightly crunchy and juicy savoury cabbage, and a fried egg; all generously drizzled with mouthwatering curry sauce. The braised meat was rich and saucy, though the texture could’ve been more tender, and the fatty layers didn’t quite melt in the mouth as expected.

Affordable and comforting bowl of thin, slurpy, chewy noodles served in a savoury soup. It comes loaded with ikan bilis, vegetables, sliced pork, minced meat, shallots, and an egg. Simple yet hearty. Appreciated that the meats were marinated, adding a touch of depth to the overall flavour.

Every time I’m here during lunch, I notice a long queue at this stall, which piqued my curiosity. Most days, I skip it due to time constraints, but one lucky day, I managed to go early, before the lunch crowd arrived, and now I understand why it’s always busy.
The portions are generous, the price is affordable, and the rice is served piping hot. I added cumin meat, which was meaty, savoury, and packed with bold flavours, its like eating chuan chuan. The tomato scrambled egg was a comforting staple which was creamy, eggy, and bursting with tangy-sweet tomato goodness. The tofu was silky and soft, though slightly cold, likely from sitting out for a while. Fortunately, the hot rice helped warm it up.
Overall, a tastisfying plate of cai png that fills the stomachs of those working in the area.

A citrusy, thirst-quenching blend of lemon and kumquat, delivering a bright, tangy kick. Refreshing and lightly sweet, it’s the perfect cool-down drink with a balanced zing.
A soothing and calming dessert that delivers a sweet, cooling finish to the meal. Light and refreshing, it’s the kind of palate cleanser that gently wraps up a flavour-packed spread without weighing you down.
Chewy squid rolls packed with bold garlicky flavour and a moderate heat that lingers just enough. The standout is the generous sprinkle of BBQ-style spice powder, adding a smoky, umami kick that clings to each bite. Aromatic, punchy, and perfect with rice or a cold drink on the side. The white rice was slightly sticky, soft and clumpy enough to hold together, though it may not appeal to those who prefer their grains fluffier and more distinct.
