[MANY OUTLETS, SINGAPORE] Finally tried our very own rendition of mala stir-fry or soup, but I might be saying an unpopular opinion here 🙃

As much as the ingredients were fresh, noodles were done right and the sauce was flavourful and spicy, it's really quite expensive 😲 especially if you were to get the potato and lotus root to fry. The freshly fried lotus root and potato chips were indeed addictive, especially with the special spice powder, but the weight of the whole potato or lotus root was equivalent to about $7-10 each 🤯 I cannot imagine paying so much just for lotus root or potato chips 😂 my bowl was like $30 hahaha how do students afford them??

Still, I'm glad to have supported local businesses and tried it, but will I go again? Maybe not, there are other much cheaper mala stalls that are still as good. The lotus root or potato chips might be unique, but it's not enough to entice me.

What do you all think?

Not the most economical bee hoon as I felt quite pricey compared to nearby coffeeshops offering similar plates at cheaper rates. This one came with a mix of kway teow and bee hoon, fish fillet, long beans, and bitter gourd, drizzled with curry sauce and topped with a dollop of sambal.

Looks good, but taste was rather normal or below average for me. The food leaned salty, though at least the basic flavour was there. I did like how they cooked the bitter gourd till its bitterness almost disappeared, lol. Sambal was solid. The noodles, however, need improvement as its lacking that shallot fragrance. Still, breakfast was filling thanks to the generous portion.

Other than their yummy Lontong and budget-friendly hearty Mee Soto, the Nasi Lemak Set is quite decent too. I had Set B, which comes with fragrant light-green coconut rice carrying a hint of pandan flavour, topped with a greasy fried egg, flavourful chicken wing, fried fish fillet, ikan bilis, peanuts, cucumber, and sambal.

The rice was semi-moist and slightly sticky, yet still soft and fluffy with a distinct lemak taste. Best enjoyed together with the spicy sambal mixed with onion and ikan bilis for maximum shiokness. The chicken wing had a slight crisp outer, probably left on the counter for a while, but the meat inside remained succulent. Ikan bilis and peanuts were really crunchy, while the fish fillet leaned chewy.

Breakfast from the same spot where I had lontong last time. Tried their Mee Soto this round. Bowl came packed with mee kuning, shredded chicken, hard-boiled egg, beansprouts, shallot, parsley, and sambal in hearty chicken soup.

Yellow noodles didn’t have that strong alkaline taste, which is good. Soup was savoury and comforting, and the chicken soaked up the flavour nicely. Sambal gave the morning spicy kick I needed to wake up well. Slurp! A good budget meal to have.

Breakfast was never the same again ever since this stall opened weeks ago. I had a bowl of Lontong made fresh on the spot by the makcik. For just $4.50, it came loaded with ingredients: carrot, cabbage, hard-boiled egg, rice cake, serundeng, long bean, tau pok, and sambal.

Don’t let that pale-looking curry fool you, the spiciness is real. It made me sweat my head off and cry a tear. Despite the heat, it was really good. Is this what they call suffering from deliciousness? Haha. The curry was quite watery, but the flavour was thick and lemaky, smooth and comforting. The vegetables were stewed till soft and melted easily with each bite. That extra sambal was very spicy, and I think it had onions and ikan bilis in it, which helped elevate the whole dish.

It’s a real yum yum. Who needs a workout when breakfast makes you sweat this much?

Loong Kee Yong Tau Fu 龍記釀豆腐 is a well known stall at 505 Jurong West Market & Food Centre. It was awarded the Michelin Selected Singapore (or Michelin Plate) in 2021.

We had
Kway Teow (S$1) + stuffed eggplant + French bean + crab stick + deep fried Beancurd skin + meatball + cabbage in dry version. Love the clear flavourful broth. Each piece of Yong tau foo was priced S$1 or S$1.20.

Hill Street Hainanese Curry Rice, offering a comforting meal featuring steamed white rice with tantalising sides such as curry chicken, braised pork, crispy pork chops, fried fish, and vegetables. The highlight is its aromatic and creamy curry sauce, made from a blend of coconut milk, curry powder, and spices.

Signature Curry Rice 招牌咖喱饭 (S$8.80)
Pork belly, pork chop, cabbage, egg, curry gravy, braised gravy over rice. It may looked ugly and messy, but the taste was comforting.
