[GEYLANG BAHRU, SINGAPORE] It's my first time to geylang bahru hawker centre, and Hui Wei was the obviously popular one. I ordered their Chilli Ban Mian ($7 for large) and I can see why 😍

This is one bowl of ban mian that is unapologetically sinful. Scoops of pork lard, soy sauce, homemade chilli and meat sauce created a wonderful blend of sweet and savoury flavours that were bursting with umami. The noodles were made in-house and cooked al dente, with a really good mouthfeel. The onsen egg was like the cream on the cake, helping to gel all flavours together. This is really intense and I devoured the bowl within minutes 😂

If I'm around the area, I'm definitely coming back here 😍 perhaps I will go easier on the chilli, as it packed a punch 😮 ban mian fans please try!

Was scrolling around the phone and got to learn about the existence of a stall named Tem Tem Curry Puff 心心咖喱卜 that is situated within Geylang Bahru Food Centre — the food centre itself is located within a short distance away from Geylang Bahru MRT Station along the Downtown Line, while the stall is neighbours with a Mei Nv Lor Mee 美女卤面 that is located on the right of Tem Tem Curry Puff. Tem Tem Curry Puff takes over the former premises of a beverage stall itself; as the namesake of the stall suggests, Tem Tem Curry Puff specialises in serving up curry puffs. Offering patrons with three (3) different variations of curry puffs, patrons would be able to pick between the Black Pepper Chicken Puff, Sardine Puff and the Curry Chicken Potato with Egg Puff at Tem Tem Curry Puff.

We managed to get a freshly-fried batch of Curry Chicken Potato with Egg Puff that just came out of deep fryer when we made our visit to the stall. The namesake of the curry puff does hint about all of the elements that is included in the curry puff itself which includes curry chicken, chunks of curry potato and egg within. Taking a bite into the curry puff, one would notice the lamination of the dough here that provides somewhat of a layered texture whilst being suitably buttery and crisp. As one breaks the curry puffs apart, the fillings within the curry chicken puff reveal itself; the puff does come reasonably packed with said fillings — the curry chicken and potatoes having absorbed the flavours of the curry that it is marinated with the curry paste, the curry chicken being pretty soft and tender. One can also find curry gravy within the curry puff itself that further adds on to the fillings within the puff — a stronger punch of curry fragrance whilst also carrying a very mild hint of spiciness that should be manageable for most tastebuds. Overall, quite a good curry puff — also probably the reason why the display case is often emptied out of curry puffs since most of them are snapped up quite quickly once they are out of the fryer!

From a biryani-focused Chinese-run stall. I wish it succeeds but it's bad throughout. Meat was either tough or rubbery and the keropok was lao hong.

What happened to them? It's like a different stall altogether. The curry was super watery. And I was offended when the stallholder asked if I wanted curry. It's like it's not a curry rice stall anymore!

Was scrolling around the phone to only find out a rather interesting sounding establishment named Batter Day Pancake that seemed to have opened its doors relatively recently in the Geylang Bahru neighbourhood. Turns out, Batter Day Pancake had recently opened its doors within the 68 Choices Eating House coffee shop that is located at the foot of Blk 68 Geylang Bahru; other stalls that one can find within the same coffeeshop will include that of Ah Ong Fried Hokkien Prawn Mee, as well as 小成手工包点 Xiao Chen Handmade Pau. Batter Day Pancake should not be too difficult to locate within the coffeeshop; the stall it occupies is situated somewhere in the middle of the whole coffeeshop, while its modern signboard featuring a mix of white and red elements with a caricature of a boy eating a pancake is a stark comparison to the other stalls within the same coffeeshop. As one might have expected, Batter Day Pancake is a stall that specialises in its pancake offerings — the stall is a what one would typically recognise as a stall serving up Min Jiang Kueh; offering patrons with only four different variants of flavours, the flavours that Batter Day Pancake serves up would include the Peanut, Red Bean, Coconut and Peanut + Peanut Butter which are pretty much very traditional flavours that one can find at the other stalls serving up such pancakes.

Whilst the go-to for most folks at Min Jiang Kueh stalls would typically be the Peanut or the Peanut + Peanut Butter flavours, we went with the Red Bean since that is the flavour that we tend to go for instead. The way that the pancakes are done and displayed at the counter does remind us of another similar establishment named Bu Bu Gao Sheng Pancake that has expanded to quite a number of locations around the island — the pancakes are prepared ahead of time, and are packed into plastic bags to be directly picked up when one makes an order for it. We were served with a piece of the Red Bean Pancake that seems to be a corner piece; rather obviously so considering the crusty edge that came along on the ends. One thing with noting is how the pancakes at Batter Day Pancake does not come across as being too thick as compared to the likes of Munchi Pancake’s rendition — these do seem to be better made as a tea-time snack option without feeling too substantial. The batter of the pancake also retains a chewy consistency with a distinct fragrance, though the ends does seemed to have lost some of its crispness given how these were already prepared ahead of time and wasn’t quite as warm as they would be if they were freshly made. There is not much to shout about when it comes to the red bean paste, though if anything, this was still definitely suitably sweet to say the least. The Cheese Pancake on the other hand was nothing much to shout about, though there is always that savouriness of processed cheese that somehow simply works with the Min Jiang Kueh for us that pretty much hits our soft spot. Prices of the Min Jiang Kueh per slice at Batter Day Pancake ranges from $1.20 to $1.40; the highest-priced ones being the Coconut and Peanut + Peanut Butter pancakes. A decent Min Jiang Kueh to go for for those reside around the vicinity of Geylang Bahru.

Xiao Chen handmade bao dian's classic siew mai, prawn tail dumpling, and crab claw dumpling offer a delightful experience at an affordable price of $2.20 per bamboo basket.
The classic siew mai is flavourful with a well-balanced mix of pork and shrimp, while the prawn tail dumplings are fresh and succulent.
The crab claw dumplings stand out with their rich taste and tender texture.
Overall, it's a satisfying treat for dim sum lovers seeking quality without breaking the bank.
